About this role

McKesson is an impact-driven, Fortune 10 company that touches virtually every aspect of healthcare. We are known for delivering insights, products, and services that make quality care more accessible and affordable. Here, we focus on the health, happiness, and well-being of you and those we serve – we care.

What you do at McKesson matters. We foster a culture where you can grow, make an impact, and are empowered to bring new ideas. Together, we thrive as we shape the future of health for patients, our communities, and our people. If you want to be part of tomorrow’s health today, we want to hear from you.

We are seeking a Senior EHR Integration Specialist to design and deliver secure, scalable, and repeatable integrations between our healthcare platform and external Electronic Health Record and Electronic Medical Record systems.

This is a hands-on senior individual-contributor role combining software engineering, healthcare interoperability, and integration architecture. The successful candidate will lead the production integration of SMART on FHIR applications into Epic clinical workflows while establishing reusable patterns that can be applied across Epic and other EHR environments.

The role requires someone who can independently evaluate complex integration needs, make informed technical recommendations, write and review implementation code, and carry work through production delivery with limited supervision. This person will serve as a technical authority across Engineering, Product, Security, Identity and Access Management, Compliance, and Operations.

What You’ll Do

Deliver EHR Integrations

- Design, implement, test, and support production integrations with external EHR systems.
- Lead the integration of SMART on FHIR applications into Epic clinical workflows.
- Implement context-aware EHR application launches using patient, encounter, and user context.
- Develop FHIR R4 integrations for clinical and administrative data exchange.
- Design and configure OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect authentication flows aligned with SMART on FHIR requirements.
- Translate integration requirements into working code, reusable components, implementation assets, and production-ready solutions.
- Troubleshoot issues involving application launch, authentication, authorization, API access, data exchange, and integration performance.

Define Reusable Integration Architecture

- Create reference architectures that use FHIR, HL7, SMART on FHIR, and CDS Hooks to support healthcare application integration and clinical decision-support workflows.
- Design secure and maintainable integration patterns that can be reused across practices, health systems, and EHR platforms.
- Recommend appropriate approaches involving APIs, FHIR servers, middleware, translation layers, orchestration, event management, and integration monitoring.
- Establish standards for data mapping, normalization, validation, and semantic interoperability.
- Design architectures in which FHIR services support interoperability between EHRs and downstream applications.
- Develop roadmaps and technical implementation approaches that reduce reliance on one-off integrations.

Accelerate Practice Onboarding

- Build reusable templates, scripts, mappings, and integration components that reduce manual onboarding work.
- Identify and implement automation opportunities across EHR integration and practice-onboarding workflows.
- Improve the repeatability, reliability, and scalability of onboarding while preserving data integrity and compliance.
- Apply approved AI-enabled engineering tools and automation techniques where they can improve design, development, testing, documentation, or implementation efficiency.
- Evaluate integration outcomes and refine patterns based on production experience.

Establish Security and Operational Standards

- Define integration requirements involving HIPAA, OAuth 2.0, role-based access control, data privacy, and secure access to clinical information.
- Partner with Security, Identity and Access Management, Product, Compliance, Engineering, and Operations to produce secure and auditable solutions.
- Create and maintain reference architectures, sequence diagrams, data mappings, implementation guides, integration designs, and operational runbooks.
- Ensure technical documentation is sufficient to support implementation, audit readiness, operational support, and future reuse.
- Recommend monitoring and observability approaches for integration health and production performance.

Provide Senior Technical Leadership

- Serve as a subject-matter expert for EHR integration, SMART on FHIR, FHIR architecture, and healthcare interoperability.
- Make integration recommendations based on prior production experience rather than relying on extended research or proof-of-concept activity for established interoperability patterns.
- Independently organize work, manage cross-team dependencies, and bring assigned initiatives to closure.
- Participate in technical and business discussions across multiple teams and translate decisions into executable integration plans.
- Influence architecture, engineering practices, and technical direction without formal people-management responsibility.
- Provide technical guidance to engineers and implementation partners.

Minimum Qualifications

Degree or equivalent and typically requires 7+ years of relevant experience.

Critical Skills

- Five or more years of experience in software engineering, integration engineering, healthcare interoperability, or solution architecture.
- Hands-on experience delivering SMART on FHIR integrations in a production environment.
- Experience integrating applications with external EHR systems, preferably Epic.
- Experience with SMART on FHIR application launch patterns, including clinical-context handling.
- Hands-on coding experience supporting APIs, application integrations, middleware, or interoperability solutions.
- Applied experience with FHIR R4, OAuth 2.0, and OpenID Connect.
- Experience working with or deploying FHIR servers.
- Experience designing secure, scalable, and reusable healthcare integration architectures.
- Experience defining reference architectures using FHIR, HL7, SMART on FHIR, CDS Hooks, or related interoperability patterns.
- Understanding of clinical workflows, healthcare data privacy, and payer-provider data exchange.
- Experience creating technical artifacts such as reference architectures, sequence diagrams, data mappings, implementation guides, or operational runbooks.
- Demonstrated ownership of complex production integrations involving multiple technical and business stakeholders.
- Experience independently evaluating integration requirements, making technical recommendations, and carrying work through implementation and production delivery.

Preferred Qualifications

- Direct experience integrating applications into Epic clinical workflows.
- Experience with Epic SMART App Launch, App Orchard, Connection Hub, Bridges, FHIR, or related Epic integration capabilities.
- Epic certification related to application integration, interoperability, or interfaces.
- Experience integrating with iKnowMed.
- Experience integrating with Cerner or Oracle Health.
- Experience with HL7 v2, CDA, C-CDA, NCPDP, Da Vinci implementation guides, or related healthcare data-exchange standards.
- Experience building applications that consume data from or write data to FHIR servers.
- Experience with FHIR persistence, versioning, subscriptions, eventing, search, performance, and scaling.
- Experience with enterprise FHIR technologies such as HAPI FHIR, Azure Health Data Services, Google Cloud Healthcare API, or comparable platforms.
- Experience with enterprise identity providers such as Microsoft Entra ID, formerly Azure Active Directory, Okta, or comparable identity platforms.
- Experience supporting large-scale or multitenant healthcare technology platforms.
- Experience with HIPAA and related security, compliance, or audit-control frameworks.
- Experience using AI-assisted development or automation tools to improve integration engineering, testing, documentation, or implementation efficiency.

Initial Success Measures

Success in the role will include:

- Integrating a SMART on FHIR application into an Epic health system and supporting its production delivery.
- Establishing reference architectures and implementation standards that teams can reuse across future EHR integrations.
- Producing implementation-ready sequence diagrams, mappings, technical designs, implementation guidance, and operational runbooks.
- Reducing manual onboarding work through reusable components, scripts, templates, and automation.
- Providing timely, experience-based technical decisions across EHR integration initiatives.
- Independently managing cross-functional work and bringing assigned integrations to closure with limited supervision.
