Responsibilities for this Position
Help make the technologies, products, and services that make a difference. At General Dynamics Mission Systems, we create advanced solutions that support critical customer missions across undersea, cyber, RF, and communications environments.
The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will develop, implement, and sustain manufacturing methods, operation sequences, and processes for parts, components, subassemblies, and final assemblies. This position will support products such as underwater vehicles, high-speed encryption systems, and tactical radios as they transition from development and prototype builds through low-rate and scalable production.
The engineer will collaborate with Design Engineering, Quality, Test, Supply Chain, and Operations to improve assembly efficiency, product quality, yield, cost, manufacturability, and testability. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining work instructions, process flows, routings, standard work, assembly documentation, and production controls. This role provides direct, hands-on support to the production floor by resolving build issues, nonconformances, rework, yield losses, material issues, and process variation. The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will support root-cause analysis, corrective actions, process-risk assessments, production-readiness reviews, first-article activities, and continuous-improvement efforts.
The position will support manufacturing-line setup and improvement, including workstation layout, material flow, tooling, fixtures, assembly aids, error-proofing methods, capacity planning, and operator training. The engineer will use 3D CAD software to develop or modify tooling, fixtures, assembly aids, and workstation concepts. The role will also identify practical opportunities to apply additive manufacturing for prototypes, production tooling, fixtures, work aids, and low-volume manufacturing support.
The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will apply DFM and DFT principles to improve assembly access, inspection capability, test access, test coverage, process repeatability, and production readiness. The engineer will partner with Design Engineering early in the product lifecycle to identify manufacturing risks, recommend practical design improvements, and reduce late design changes.
The role will evaluate opportunities to use artificial intelligence, automation, and data-driven tools to improve manufacturing documentation, analyze production data, identify trends, capture lessons learned, support issue resolution, and improve productivity.
The successful candidate will communicate clearly and work collaboratively with production operators, technicians, engineers, quality personnel, supply-chain partners, and program leadership. This role requires a hands-on, self-directed approach; sound judgment; strong ownership; attention to detail; and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic production environment.
What you’ll experience:
- Hands-on involvement in advanced, mission-critical products and technologies.
- Opportunities to support new-product introduction, manufacturing-line development, production ramp, and process improvement.
- Collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering, quality, test, supply-chain, and operations teams.
- Opportunities to expand knowledge in advanced manufacturing, additive manufacturing, AI-enabled process improvement, and complex electro-mechanical product integration.
What you bring to the table:
- Experience supporting manufacturing, assembly, integration, test, prototype, or production activities for electro-mechanical products.
- Working knowledge of manufacturing-process development, work instructions, process flows, routings, standard work, tooling, fixtures, and production documentation.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, bills of material, schematics, 3D models, and technical specifications.
- Familiarity with manufacturing methods, assembly processes, production equipment, quality-control requirements, and continuous-improvement techniques.
- Experience using 3D CAD software, such as Creo, SolidWorks, or an equivalent tool.
- Working knowledge of DFM, DFT, Lean manufacturing, root-cause analysis, and practical problem-solving methods.
- Strong organizational, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with Design Engineering, Quality, Test, Supply Chain, Operations, technicians, and production personnel.
What sets you apart:
- Experience supporting the manufacture and integration of complex electro-mechanical, communications, maritime, RF, or ruggedized products.
- Experience establishing or improving manufacturing lines, workstations, material flow, operator training, capacity planning, and production controls.
- Familiarity with additive-manufacturing methods and their application to fixtures, tooling, work aids, prototypes, and low-volume production support.
- Experience with PFMEA, process-risk assessments, control plans, process validation, and first-article activities.
- A hands-on, practical approach to resolving production-floor issues and driving corrective actions to closure.
- Interest in using artificial intelligence, automation, and data analytics to improve manufacturing processes, documentation, and productivity.
- A collaborative work style that builds trust with operators, technicians, engineers, and program leadership.
- Demonstrated initiative, adaptability, and follow-through, with the ability to identify risks early and maintain focus on quality, schedule, cost, and customer mission success.
