What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?

Few opportunities give you the chance to help rebuild the engine room of a bank. Through Core Ledger Replacement, we’re modernising the lending technology at the heart of BNZ—moving from legacy systems to a modern, cloud-based core banking platform. The scale is significant, with the impact set to be felt across the entire organisation and through the experiences we deliver for our customers. If you’re excited by large-scale platform modernisation, enterprise integration, and building technology that will shape the future of lending at BNZ, we’d love to hear from you.

What is the team culture and environment like?
Our team operates in a collaborative and supportive environment where knowledge sharing, technical excellence, and continuous improvement are highly valued. Team members work closely together to solve complex problems, contribute ideas, and support each other's professional growth. Together we have a strong focus on quality, innovation, and delivering excellent outcomes.

What technical skills are required for this role?

We’re looking for strong software engineering experience, with deep expertise in one or more of the following technologies: Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, Kafka, microservices, Kubernetes, and AWS.

You’ll have a proven track record of leading complex technical delivery across systems and teams, taking ownership of large-scale features or platforms from design and development through to deployment, production support, and continuous improvement.

What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role?

You’ll be a strategic problem solver who can make sound trade-offs in ambiguous environments, balancing technical decisions with business outcomes. Just as importantly, you’ll be a clear communicator and collaborative leader who builds trust across teams, supports an inclusive engineering culture, and helps grow others through coaching, mentoring, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
