About this role

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

The Google Home Infrastructure team builds the platform that powers hundreds of millions of smart home devices. We connect speakers, displays, cameras, thermostats, locks, sensors, and home entertainment systems with intelligence and cloud services.

Our mission is to create a resilient, low-latency distributed backbone that turns disconnected smart devices into a unified, proactive, and assistive ecosystem. As homes transform from reactive voice commands to autonomous, multi-agent AI experiences that assist families in their daily lives, our infrastructure delivers the mission-critical distributed storage, real-time event streaming, high-throughput authorization, device lifecycle management, and agentic control planes that make it all possible at global scale.
The Google Home team focuses on hardware, software and services offerings for the home, ranging from thermostats to smart displays. The Home team researches, designs, and develops new technologies and hardware to make users’ homes more helpful. Our mission is the helpful home: to create a home that cares for the people inside it and the world around it.Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

- 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.

- 3 years of experience with developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage or hardware architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

- Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.

- 5 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.

- 1 year of experience in a technical leadership role.

- Experience with low-level and high-level networking protocols.

- Experience in the smart home, IoT, or voice assistant domain.

- Scope and execute complex, zero-downtime infrastructure migrations (e.g., cloud platform consolidation, legacy protocol sunsets), drastically reducing operational overhead and infrastructure costs.

- Own the architectural direction and multi-quarter technical roadmap for key infrastructure components (e.g., storage platforms, device control planes, or authorization backends).

- Lead the execution strategy for large-scale data store consolidations. Migrating legacy datastores into unified distributed stores and replacing legacy pipelines with modern event-driven architectures.

- Partner with New Product Introduction (NPI) teams, partner platforms, and product stakeholders to drive convergence across fragmented device lifecycle systems into a single unified protocol.

- Architect scalable, resilient authorization frameworks that uphold strict isolation between communal home state and personal user data across high-QPS production traffic.
