The roles can be based in Hartford, CT, Westwood, MA, or Manchester, NH
The Principal Engineer must have extensive experience with modeling and planning the bulk electric power system; exhibit strong technical skills to apply to long-range load forecasting, testing and planning; and leverage company and industry experience to develop model improvements to represent equipment such as transmission lines, transformers, generators, circuit breakers, FACTS devices, Inverter-Based Resources (IBR), battery storage, etc.
Additional work will involve conducting mandatory compliance analyses. Studies will be conducted in adherence to criteria from Eversource, ISO-New England (ISO NE), Northeast Power Coordination Council (NPCC), and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC).
This role also directs and prepares documents, testimony, and written responses and may testify as part of regulatory requirements and proceedings. This role may represent Eversource on regional and national transmission committees regarding transmission planning matters for NERC, NPCC, ISO NE, and New England Power Pool (NEPOOL).
Essential Functions:
- Serve as a technical specialist to transmission planning in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes. Recognized as the technical expert both internally and externally. Ability to understand the implications and contribute to the development of the integrated power system which includes transmission, distribution, generation, load, storage, and energy markets.
- Direct, as team or project leader, the more sensitive, highly complex engineering assessments and modelling which may be multi-discipline in nature and require the use of state-of-the-art/advanced technology.
- Prepare documentation and testimony in support of regulatory filings or compliance studies.

- Lead and perform reliability and/or strategic scenario-based planning studies including a variety of existing and forecast system conditions. These studies include themal, voltage, short-circuit, dynamic stability, PV, transfer limit, and electromagnetic transient assessments.
- Use technical experience to contribute sound engineering input to model development and updates.
- Conduct critical review of data and assumptions from regional and industry stakeholders.
- Interface with ISO-New England, area transmission owners, and Eversource departments [such as: UG and OH Transmission Line engineering, Substation Engineering, Protection & Controls Engineering, Asset Management, Compliance, Operations, Substation Technical, Distributed Energy Resource (DER), and other departments] to understand and document electric system compliance, needs, and challenges to enable reliable future growth.
