About this role
Job Title: Mechanical Engineer Job Description This Mechanical Engineer role supports a growing portfolio of complex, low-volume industrial equipment projects. You will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary design team to review and refine mechanical designs, ensure adherence to standards, and support high-quality fabrication of large structural steel assemblies and heavy industrial machinery. The position offers the opportunity to take on leadership and mentoring responsibilities, contribute to unique and technically challenging projects, and grow into greater ownership of requirements development and project leadership over time. Responsibilities
- Collaborate daily with the design team to review mechanical designs for large industrial equipment and heavy machinery.
- Ensure all designs adhere to internal standards, industry codes, and best practices for structural steel, weldments, and fabrication.
- Prepare, review, and refine fabrication drawings, including detailed weld symbols, tolerances, and GD&T specifications.
- Support low-volume production and project-type work by translating design intent into clear, manufacturable documentation.
- Lead or mentor junior engineers, co-op students, or other team members by providing technical guidance and constructive feedback.
- Participate in engineering change order (ECO) processes, including evaluating design impacts, updating models and drawings, and maintaining documentation accuracy.
- Contribute to the creation and maintenance of bills of materials (BOMs) to ensure accurate part lists and assemblies for manufacturing.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams such as fabrication, quality, and project stakeholders to resolve technical issues and improve design robustness.
- Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure proper fit, function, and manufacturability of components and assemblies.
- Support or participate in design reviews, offering detailed, quality-focused feedback on mechanical design and fabrication approaches.
- Assist with or contribute to FMEA and other quality-related activities to identify and mitigate design risks, when applicable.
- Collaborate in a team-oriented environment, actively sharing information and working closely with colleagues rather than operating independently.
- Gradually expand into developing requirements and taking on more advanced responsibilities as you grow within the team.
Essential Skills
- 510 years of experience in large industrial equipment manufacturing.
- Strong knowledge of structural steel design, weldments, and fabrication practices.
- Proficiency in creating and interpreting fabrication drawings, including weld symbols and detailed manufacturing notes.
- Solid understanding and practical application of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Experience working in low-volume production or project-type environments.
- At least 2 years of experience in a mentorship or leadership capacity, such as guiding co-op students or junior engineers.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D modeling and drafting.
- Experience working with engineering change orders (ECOs).
- Ability to develop and manage bills of materials (BOMs).
- Strong attention to detail and a quality-focused mindset in design and documentation.
- Comfort working in a collaborative, team-based environment with close coordination across disciplines.
- Willingness to begin in a contract capacity rather than requiring a permanent role from day one.
- Hands-on manufacturing exposure, with the ability to understand and support fabrication processes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in quality engineering and FMEA, with the ability to support risk assessment and mitigation in designs.
- Ability to travel internationally without restrictions.
- Experience in amusement ride manufacturing or amusement ride-related equipment.
- Experience with material selection, particularly fibreglass, composites, and other advanced materials.
- Simple coding or scripting experience in languages such as C#, VBA, Python, or MATLAB.
- Any project management experience, including planning, scheduling, or coordinating project deliverables.
- Experience with rapid prototyping methods and tools.
- Exposure to or experience within well-structured, established manufacturing organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to thrive on unique, technically challenging projects where products are not mass-produced.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with a collaborative mindset and a preference for working closely with others rather than independently.
