Job Title :

Planner / Scheduler

Reports To :

Manager, Supply Planning

Location:

Houston Plant

Business Unit Description :

Foot and Ankle

High-Level Position Summary :

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Planner / Scheduler to join our team. The Planner / Scheduler is responsible for the daily and weekly finite-capacity production schedule for the Houston Machine Shop, supporting a high-mix machining and discrete manufacturing environment.

This role translates demand and supply requirements into an executable production plan by balancing customer demand, inventory, material availability, tooling, machine capacity, work-order priorities, outside processing, and downstream constraints. The Master Scheduler is accountable for maintaining a stable production flow and ensuring the right parts are available at the right time to meet customer and business commitments.

In addition to core production scheduling, the Planner / Scheduler owns the supply planning and production scheduling workstream for NPI, product launches, manufacturing transfers, and CAPEX initiatives. The Master Scheduler develops and maintains an integrated production roadmap and back-schedules launch requirements through the complete manufacturing flow to ensure production readiness and on-time launch execution.

The Planner / Scheduler serves as a central coordination point across Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Procurement, Operations, and Program Management, providing visibility into capacity, constraints, risks, and required actions.

Success is measured by schedule attainment, on-time delivery, service level, machine utilization, inventory performance, production stability, and on-time launch readiness.

Key Responsibilities : The following are the primary duties and responsibilities of this role. Other related duties may be assigned to meet the business need.

- Master Production Scheduling & Execution Build, maintain, and continuously adjust daily and weekly finite-capacity production schedules, keeping the master schedule accurate and executable against actual machine capacity, material availability, WIP, and operational constraints.

- Sequence work orders based on demand, due dates, customer priorities, inventory requirements, machine capabilities, tooling, material availability, changeovers, and downstream capacity.

- Balance competing priorities and resolve production constraints through resequencing, load leveling, changeover optimization, overtime, outsourcing, or other approved mitigation strategies.

- Release, monitor, and maintain work orders in NetSuite, ensuring accurate quantities, routings, statuses, priorities, and completion dates.

- Monitor schedule adherence, identify deviations early, and lead adherence discussions with Manufacturing, Quality, and Engineering. Escalate material, capacity, quality, tooling, equipment, or labor constraints that threaten committed dates, along with recovery actions.

- Review MRP outputs, exceptions, shortages, and rescheduling recommendations, and determine scheduling actions that address supply constraints while maintaining production stability.

- Balance service-level requirements against WIP and finished-goods inventory objectives, and identify and reduce stockouts, excess inventory, aging WIP, and unnecessary schedule disruptions.

- 2. Outside Processing & Downstream Flow Create and manage outside processing POs within the production schedule, coordinating timing, priorities, and status. Follow up on delays and build recovery plans to protect downstream operations.

- Maintain visibility of parts through downstream operations and adjust production priorities when constraints threaten customer or launch commitments.

- 3. NPI, Product Launch & CAPEX Scheduling Own the supply planning and production scheduling workstream for NPI Product Launches and Capex Initiatives.

- Partner with the PMO to translate committed launch and build dates into detailed production requirements and executable schedules.

- Back-schedule launch requirements through the complete manufacturing/product flow to ensure parts are available in finished goods with sufficient time to support NPI and CAPEX builds.

- Maintain a single, forward-looking integrated production roadmap that combines existing production demand with launches, manufacturing transfers, and capacity expansions.

- Assess the impact of new programs on machine capacity, materials, tooling, OSP, inspection, labor, and existing customer demand, and identify schedule conflicts, capacity gaps, and material risks before they affect committed dates.

- Coordinate with Engineering, Quality, Procurement, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and Operations to confirm launch readiness.

- Track launch-part status and communicate risks, recovery actions, and expected completion dates to the PMO and leadership.

- 4. Capacity Planning & Operational Analytics Monitor machine loading, utilization, bottlenecks, queue times, and capacity availability, and maintain visibility into current and projected capacity relative to demand.

- Identify short-, medium-, and long-term capacity gaps and recommend appropriate actions, including schedule changes, overtime, outsourcing or other approved mitigation strategies.

- Use ERP data, data modeling, and Power BI to convert operational data into actionable insights.

- Present KPI performance, risks, trends, and recommended actions to stakeholders and leadership.

- 5. Continuous Improvement Identify and drive opportunities to improve scheduling accuracy, production flow, changeover performance, capacity utilization, and on-time delivery across the machine shop's planning and scheduling processes.

- Support Lean, Six Sigma, and other operational excellence initiatives as appropriate.

- Perform other related duties as assigned to meet business needs.

Minimum Basic Qualifications :

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, Operations Management, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

- 4–5 years of progressively responsible experience in production planning, master scheduling, supply planning, manufacturing operations, or a related discipline.

- Demonstrated experience scheduling production in a finite-capacity manufacturing environment, with hands-on work-order management and outside-processing coordination.

- Working knowledge of MRP and ERP systems for production planning, inventory management, and work-order execution; experience with NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, or a comparable ERP system (NetSuite preferred).

- Working knowledge of Power BI or a comparable BI platform, with the ability to develop and interpret operational dashboards and reports.

- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to prioritize competing requirements, identify risks, and coordinate resolution across departments.

Work environment | Physical demands:

- Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time
- Ability to work in an office and manufacturing environment

Desired Characteristics :

- Experience in medical device or other FDA-regulated manufacturing, including GMP and Device History Records

- Understanding of machining setups, changeovers, cycle times, routings, machine capabilities, and production constraints

- Experience with Power BI data modeling and connecting BI tools to ERP or manufacturing data

- Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma training or certification

- Experience working in a high-mix, low-to-medium-volume discrete manufacturing environment

Key Success Measures :

- Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma training or certification

- Schedule attainment, on-time delivery, schedule stability, and accuracy of the master production schedule

- Service level and stockout performance

- WIP and finished-goods inventory performance

- Machine utilization, OSP performance, and downstream flow

- On-time NPI, product launch, manufacturing transfer, and CAPEX milestones, with launch parts available in finished goods in time to support committed builds

- Timely identification and mitigation of capacity and material risks, and accuracy of ERP scheduling and work-order data
