About this role

Electrical Engineer

This role focuses on the end-to-end design and development of advanced analog and mixed-signal circuits for high-performance optical measurement and industrial test instrumentation. You will work on full design engineering from initial concept through schematic capture, simulation, and support for PCB layout, as well as prototyping and release to production. The position emphasizes ultra-low-noise signal chains, precision data acquisition, and DC-DC power supply design, while collaborating closely with firmware, manufacturing, and cross-functional teams to deliver highly optimized, non-basic designs. ----- Responsibilities

- Design and maintain analog and mixed-signal circuits from DC to 2 GHz, including small-signal amplifier chains, precision data-acquisition systems, and DC-DC power supplies.
- Develop ultra-low-noise photodiode front ends and signal conditioning circuits for high-performance optical measurement instruments.
- Perform detailed analytical and experimental analysis of electrical circuits using SPICE simulations and bench testing, and document results clearly and thoroughly.
- Manage designs from initial concept through schematic capture, PCB layout optimization support (component placement and signal routing), prototyping, and production release.
- Select components, perform schematic capture, and run simulations as part of the full PCB design flow, coordinating with PCB layout specialists for final board layout.
- Design analog circuitry that supports FPGA and microcontroller-based digital systems, including adapting power supplies and signal conditioning to meet digital subsystem requirements.
- Ensure that analog designs meet application needs from a digital perspective, including signal integrity, power distribution, and interface requirements.
- Contribute to microcontroller firmware development for bare-metal and embedded systems used in instrumentation, primarily for testing and validation of hardware.
- Participate in programming, debugging, and testing of microcontroller-based subsystems to verify proper operation of the designed hardware.
- Assist Manufacturing in developing test procedures and diagnosing issues during production startup of new products.
- Define testing and acceptance criteria for finished products to ensure performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
- Provide technical support to Customer Service and Marketing when field issues require electrical engineering expertise.
- Participate in design reviews and actively contribute to cross-functional project teams focused on new product development and product enhancements.
- Monitor trends and innovations in components, technologies, and design techniques relevant to the companys product lines and incorporate improvements where appropriate.
- Continuously improve the performance, reliability, and manufacturability of existing products through design refinements and optimization.
- Develop a deep understanding of the product portfolio, key markets, and customer applications to inform design decisions and product strategy.
- Potentially manage or lead projects of broad scope and complexity to develop and introduce new or significantly enhanced products into manufacturing.
- Potentially train or mentor less experienced engineers, sharing best practices in analog and mixed-signal design.
- Comply with all quality procedures and work instructions throughout the design and development process.

----- Essential Skills

- BSEE or MSEE, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- 4+ years of hands-on experience designing analog and mixed-signal circuits.
- Strong fundamental knowledge of analog circuitry, including power supply design, amplifier design, power management, noise reduction, impedance, filtering, grounding, operational amplifiers, power distribution, analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), and GHz-level signals.
- Demonstrated experience with low-noise signal chain design and data-acquisition systems.
- Proficiency with SPICE simulation tools and analytical circuit design techniques from initial concept through physical PCB realization.
- Experience with PCB CAD tools and a solid understanding of component placement and signal routing for mixed-signal boards.
- Proven experience with the full PCB design flow, including component selection, schematic capture, and simulation, in collaboration with a separate PCB layout team.
- Experience working on boards that include FPGAs and/or microcontrollers.
- Ability to design analog circuitry that supports digital system requirements, including adapting power supplies and interfaces for FPGAs and microcontrollers.
- Working knowledge of microcontroller programming and embedded systems.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and prioritize work effectively.
- Balanced experience in both analog and digital domains with a focus on analog design; not limited to only one discipline.

----- Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Experience with Altium Designer or comparable PCB design tools.
- Experience designing DC-DC power supplies.
- Familiarity with Microchip PIC microcontrollers and associated toolchains.
- Familiarity with Xilinx FPGAs and associated toolchains.
- Knowledge of high-performance industrial test and measurement instrumentation.
- Exposure to fiber-optic test and measurement techniques, including optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDRs).
- Some experience in C, C++, or C# for testing and validating hardware designs.
- Experience working effectively as both a team contributor and a project lead.
- Ability to mentor junior engineers and support knowledge sharing within the team.

----- Work Environment This is an on-site role based in an engineering and lab environment, with work typically performed five days per week on site, with some flexibility but no fixed hybrid schedule. You will work closely with cross-functional engineering teams on sophisticated, high-performance instrumentation, using tools such as SPICE simulators, PCB CAD systems (e.g., Altium Designer or similar), FPGA and microcontroller toolchains (including Xilinx and Microchip PIC environments), and standard electronic lab equipment for bench testing and validation. The culture emphasizes full-cycle design engineering, deep technical optimization, and collaboration across hardware, firmware, manufacturing, and customer-facing teams. The role offers a comprehensive benefits package, including a quarterly bonus target of 15% and additional benefits such as PTO, sick leave, retirement plans, and health and medical coverage, reflecting a commitment to supporting employees well-being and long-term growth ----- Skip the wait Book 15 minutes with me and I'll walk you through whether this is worth your time.
