About this role
Staff Software Engineer, New York Magazine
Vox Media Group LLC
Vox Media Group LLC is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to help shape the technology behind New York Magazine’s journalism and consumer subscriptions business. Your primary focus will be the websites, publishing platform, and subscription experiences supporting New York , The Cut, Vulture, Intelligencer, The Strategist, Grub Street, and Curbed. You’ll also contribute to the NYMag mobile apps for iOS and Android.
As a hands-on technical engineering leader, you’ll help editors publish compelling stories, readers discover journalism they value, and subscribers get the most from their relationship with our brands. Your work will span editorial experiences and the subscriber journey, from registration and purchase through onboarding, account management, and ongoing engagement.
You’ll partner with product, design, editorial, and consumer revenue teams to guide technical decisions and deliver improvements across web and mobile. You’ll also help advance our responsible use of AI and agentic workflows to increase delivery speed, expand engineering capacity, and improve efficiency.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Lead complex engineering initiatives. Translate product and business needs into technical plans, align collaborators around architectural decisions, and guide projects from discovery through delivery and operation.
- Build and improve consumer subscription experiences. Develop subscription offers, checkout flows, promotions, gifting, onboarding, and account management features that support acquisition, conversion, and retention.
- Strengthen subscriber identity and access. Improve the integrations connecting authentication, payments, subscription status, and content entitlements so readers can reliably access what they’ve purchased across web and mobile.
- Support experimentation and growth. Partner with consumer revenue, product, and analytics teams to improve paywalls, registration experiences, and subscription journeys through reliable experiments and measurable results.
- Evolve our publishing platform. Build reusable components, editorial tools, and reader experiences that support the distinct needs of our brands and make publishing easier.
- Contribute to the NYMag mobile app. Partner with mobile engineers on reading experiences, content discovery, and subscriber features. Design APIs and content models that support consistent experiences across platforms.
- Guide incremental modernization. Identify architectural risks and technical debt, improve developer workflows, and balance near-term delivery with the long-term maintainability of an established platform.
- Improve quality and reliability. Investigate production issues, strengthen automated testing and observability, and address performance, accessibility, and security across publishing and subscription workflows.
- Champion responsible AI use. Develop and refine AI-assisted and agentic workflows for implementation, testing, debugging, review, and documentation. Protect sensitive information, validate generated changes, and maintain accountability for the resulting software.
- Help the team succeed. Mentor engineers, lead constructive code and design reviews, document important decisions, and establish shared practices that improve the team’s effectiveness.
We’re looking for someone who brings:
- Deep JavaScript expertise and substantial experience building and operating production web applications and Node.js services.
- A track record of leading complex technical initiatives across systems or teams, with impact beyond their individual contributions.
- Strong frontend fundamentals, including HTML, CSS, accessibility, browser behavior, and application performance, alongside experience with frameworks such as Vue or React.
- Experience designing APIs, data models, and integrations, including reliable handling of authentication, authorization, and transactional workflows.
- Sound judgment when evolving mature codebases, including knowing when to extend existing patterns and when to introduce new approaches.
- Strong debugging and testing skills, with experience diagnosing problems across application, service, and data boundaries.
- The ability to connect engineering decisions to reader experience and business outcomes, including subscription conversion, engagement, and retention.
- Experience using AI development tools responsibly, including providing useful context, evaluating generated output, and recognizing when human review and decision-making are essential.
- Clear communication, collaborative technical leadership, and the ability to contribute to a TypeScript and React Native codebase.
Additional experience that would be valuable includes:
- Consumer subscriptions, digital media, ecommerce, or other businesses built around recurring customer relationships.
- Paywalls, payment platforms, subscription billing integrations, identity systems, or entitlement management.
- Experimentation platforms, conversion analytics, and customer lifecycle experiences.
- React Native, Expo, or shipping applications for iOS and Android.
- Content management systems, editorial workflows, PostgreSQL, Redis, or Elasticsearch.
- Building reusable AI workflows, agent tooling, or automation that improves engineering productivity.
Our web platform uses Node.js, Express, Clay CMS, Vue, and Handlebars. Our mobile app uses TypeScript, React Native, and Expo. You’ll work across these technologies and the services connecting content, customer accounts, and subscriptions.
We value curiosity, trust, respect, and clear communication. We’re looking for someone who enjoys sharing knowledge, learning from colleagues, and helping the whole team succeed. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn’t match every technology listed.
