About this role

Description

Amazon Leo is building a global e-commerce experience for Internet Service Provider (ISP) customers, and we need a Software Development Engineer II. You will build the backend-for-frontend layer, the service that sits directly behind the customer-facing surfaces and orchestrates over the many backend systems that make satellite internet work: ordering, payments, billing, equipment and network provisioning, and support. The job is to shape what the frontend needs, route and orchestrate requests across those systems, translate between them, and compose their responses into reliable operations the customer experience can depend on. The core of the work is integration: calling many APIs, handling partial failures gracefully, mapping between different service models, and keeping latency and reliability high across a lot of moving parts. Much of this is built zero-to-one and expanding into new countries, so you will move from ambiguous problems to working products. You will own the full development lifecycle and work closely with frontend, product, and partner service teams.

Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key job responsibilities
- Design and build backend gateway APIs in Java that route and orchestrate requests across many downstream services, from concept through deployment and operation.
- Integrate with ordering, payments, billing, equipment and network provisioning, and support services: calling their APIs, translating between their models, and composing their responses.
- Handle the realities of a distributed system: partial failures, retries, timeouts, error translation, and keeping latency and reliability high across many dependencies.
- Work with product managers, frontend engineers, and partner service teams, and help the platform expand into new countries.
- Use agentic development workflows and generative AI tools to deliver faster, and improve the system with AWS native services.
- Review code, give feedback, and coach teammates on service integration patterns and well-tested code.
- Document your team's software and train new team members on how it is built, tested, and operated.

About the team
We build the e-commerce experience for a global ISP customer base at Amazon Leo. Our team owns the backend-for-frontend layer: the single API the customer-facing app talks to, and the orchestration behind it that connects to the systems provisioning and running satellite internet. We work hand in hand with the frontend team, shaping our APIs around what their experiences need. We are scaling the team and investing in AI-based development and operational workflows.

Basic Qualifications

- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- 3+ years of programming using a modern programming language such as Java, C++, or C#, including object-oriented design experience
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- Experience testing back end services

Preferred Qualifications

- 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- 2+ years of contributing to new and current systems architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) experience
- Experience with test-driven development
- Experience with dependency injection, API modeling, and clean layering (separating API endpoints, business-logic orchestration, and downstream service clients)
- Experience building API gateway, orchestration, or backend-for-frontend services that integrate many downstream dependencies
