About this role
Job Title: Electrical Design Engineer / CAD Operator Job Description
This role focuses primarily on using AutoCAD to modify existing electrical designs while supporting panel building and testing in a combined office and shop environment. As familiarity with departmental standards grows, the position will expand to include designing electrical schematics from scratch and gaining hands-on exposure to PLC programming and AutoCAD Electrical. This opportunity is ideal for an electrical design professional who enjoys both detailed CAD work and occasional hands-on shop involvement in a modern, growth-oriented setting.
Responsibilities
- Modify existing electrical designs using AutoCAD after developing a strong understanding of company requirements and standards.
- Create and update electrical schematics to support production schedules and ensure designs meet functional and safety expectations.
- Develop capabilities to design electrical schematics from scratch as knowledge of internal processes, products, and systems increases.
- Collaborate with office and shop personnel to ensure electrical designs align with practical build requirements and production needs.
- Assist with building electrical panels in the shop, including wiring, layout, and component placement, particularly during the initial training period.
- Support panel testing activities in the shop to verify correct operation and troubleshoot issues as needed.
- Maintain accurate and organized design documentation, drawings, and revisions to support repeatability and future modifications.
- Participate in on-the-job training for PLC programming and AutoCAD Electrical to broaden technical capabilities over time.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by suggesting design or process enhancements based on hands-on experience in both office and shop environments.
Essential Skills
- 25 years of electrical design experience, preferably focused on industrial or panel-based systems.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD software for creating and modifying electrical drawings and schematics.
- Ability and willingness to assist with building electrical panels in the shop as needed, especially during the initial phase of the role.
- Strong understanding of electrical schematics and components sufficient to interpret, modify, and validate designs.
- Capability to work effectively in both office and shop environments and to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in drafting, documentation, and revision control.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with AutoCAD Electrical is a plus and may be developed further through on-the-job training.
- Familiarity with PLC programming is preferred but not required; training opportunities are available for motivated candidates.
- Interest in growing from modifying existing designs to independently creating new electrical schematics from scratch.
- Comfort working in a startup-style environment that values adaptability, initiative, and continuous learning.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to learning new tools, technologies, and processes.
Work Environment
The role is based primarily in a combined office and shop setting, with approximately 9598% of the time spent on-site. The shop is a brand-new, air-conditioned and heated facility where electrical panels are built and tested, providing a comfortable and modern workspace. The position follows a Monday to Friday schedule, totaling 40 hours per week, within a startup environment that emphasizes growth, collaboration, and hands-on learning. The work involves regular interaction with both office-based design activities and shop-floor panel assembly and testing, offering a balanced mix of technical and practical responsibilities.
