About this role
ABOUT SLATE
At Slate, we’re building safe, reliable vehicles that people can afford, personalize and love—and doing it here in the USA as part of our commitment to reindustrialization. The spirit of DIY and customization runs throughout every element of a Slate, because people should have control over how their trucks look, feel, and represent them.
| WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Slate is looking for a hands-on Plant Vehicle Engineering Intern, Electrical Systems & Harness Support to support production ramp readiness, production quality, and issue resolution for low-voltage electrical systems, harness routing, connectors, software-enabled vehicle systems, diagnostics, and End-of-Line concerns at the Warsaw Assembly Plant.
This internship is intended for a student interested in automotive electrical systems, vehicle diagnostics, software integration, wiring harnesses, manufacturing ramp, and plant-based engineering. The intern will support the Plant Vehicle Engineering team by helping identify build issues, collect data, document concerns, assist with triage, and improve first-time quality.
This role does not own design release or final engineering decisions. It supports Plant Vehicle Engineering, Design & Release Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Production, End of Line, Suppliers, Service, and Vehicle Integration by helping protect product intent in the plant and strengthening the feedback loop between Engineering and Manufacturing.
| WHAT YOU GET TO DO
Electrical Systems & Harness Support
- Support plant-floor issue triage for low-voltage electrical systems, harness routing, connector seating, terminal condition, grounds, power distribution, and module communication concerns.
- Assist with inspection of harness routing, clipping, bend radius, strain relief, chafing, connector engagement, and installation quality.
- Help document electrical and harness issues with photos, connector IDs, circuit information, DTCs, test results, and repair validation notes.
- Support basic checks related to power, ground, continuity, voltage drop, connector engagement, and harness routing under the guidance of PVE engineers and technicians.
- Assist with identifying whether concerns appear related to wiring, connector engagement, harness routing, power/ground, module communication, software/configuration, or build process.
Software Integration & Diagnostics Support
- Assist with vehicle diagnostics, DTC collection, End-of-Line issue documentation, software/configuration checks, and issue tracking.
- Support engineers during module flashing, software version verification, configuration-readiness checks, and diagnostic follow-up where appropriate.
- Help analyze trends from End-of-Line results, repair records, build observations, and plant feedback.
- Support containment and issue closure by helping document affected build ranges, repeatability, diagnostic results, physical inspection findings, and validation status.
Ramp & Production Support
- Support SOP, and production ramp activities.
- Assist Plant Vehicle Engineering during build events, plant trials, validation builds, ramp readiness reviews, and production issue reviews.
- Help maintain issue trackers, breakpoint records, containment documentation, lessons learned, and follow-up action lists.
- Participate in plant-floor reviews with PVE, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Production, End of Line, Suppliers, and Design Engineering.
- Support continuous improvement activities that reduce defects, improve issue documentation, and strengthen production readiness.
Success Factors
- Improve documentation quality for electrical, software, diagnostic, and harness-related concerns.
- Support faster issue triage by helping collect accurate data, photos, DTCs, build information, and physical inspection findings.
- Help reduce repeat troubleshooting by improving issue tracking, communication, and follow-up discipline.
- Support ramp readiness through organized build support, End-of-Line follow-up, containment documentation, and breakpoint tracking.
- Build practical knowledge of automotive electrical systems, diagnostics, software integration, harness routing, and plant issue resolution.
- Strengthen communication between Plant Vehicle Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Production, End of Line, Suppliers, and Design Engineering.
| WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TEAM
Education and Experience
- Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Mechatronics.
- Must have at least a 3.0 or higher.
- Must be able to start in January 2027 and able to work through the spring.
- Interest in automotive electrical systems, vehicle diagnostics, software integration, wiring harnesses, manufacturing ramp, or plant-based engineering.
- Hands-on project, lab, internship, co-op, technician, robotics, Formula SAE, Baja SAE, EV club, or vehicle diagnostic experience preferred.
Skills
- Basic understanding of electrical circuits, voltage, current, resistance, power, ground, fuses, relays, connectors, and wiring.
- Interest in learning vehicle diagnostics, DTCs, CAN/LIN communication, module flashing, and End-of-Line testing.
- Ability to read or learn wiring diagrams, connector views, pinouts, schematics, technical documents, and work instructions.
- Strong documentation habits, including photos, notes, issue summaries, test results, and validation status.
- Comfortable working in a manufacturing plant environment and asking questions when something is unclear.
- Strong curiosity, attention to detail, and willingness to learn hands-on in a ramp environment.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with engineers, technicians, production team members, quality representatives, and plant leadership.
| WORKING CONDITIONS
- Internship based onsite at the Warsaw Assembly Plant.
- Manufacturing plant environment with regular plant-floor engagement.
- Role may require standing, walking the production floor, observing builds, supporting vehicle inspections, and following all safety requirements.
- Work involving high-voltage systems must follow Slate safety procedures and may only be performed by authorized personnel.
