Associate Director, Integration of Automation Pharmacist

Pharmacy Automation and Systems

LillyDirect Pharmacy Operations  |  Indianapolis, IN

About LillyDirect

U.S. consumers navigate considerable complexity in managing their healthcare, and their experience is often vastly different from the personalized, seamless engagements we have come to expect from the banking, retail, and travel industries. While the pandemic led to innovations in virtual care, alternate models for distribution, and integrated health and wellness solutions, these innovations focus on specific points in the patient journey rather than a holistic, end-to-end patient experience.

Launched in January 2024 for people in the U.S. living with obesity, migraine, and diabetes, LillyDirect is an industry-first digital healthcare experience designed to support and empower patients on their care journey. Through this new operating model, Lilly aims to improve patient access to care, help reduce healthcare costs, and enable better outcomes for people living with chronic disease. The rapid uptake of LillyDirect since its launch underscores the significant unmet need of people struggling to navigate the complex U.S. health care system. As such, we are seeking to expand our offerings and scale business operations to enable better outcomes for patients.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Pharmacist to deliver the automation and system-integration work that LillyDirect Pharmacy depends on to scale and to serve as the pharmacy's technical authority on automation validation. The ideal candidate brings strong professional judgment, a builder's approach to pharmacy technology, and a commitment to patient safety and compliance, ideally in an online or direct-to-patient environment.

This position turns the automation and integration roadmap into working capability. The successful candidate defines requirements, configures and validates changes, manages release and change control with Lilly IT and technology partners, and measures whether automation actually reduces manual work and rework as intended.

This position is the technical authority for automation in the pharmacy. It determines whether automation that touches prescription data passes validation before release, and it shapes the automation roadmap through sequencing and prioritization recommendations to pharmacy leadership. Portfolio priority and final technology sign-off sit with pharmacy leadership, and optimization of the pharmacy management system sits with a separate position.

This is a pharmacist position because the work touches prescription data and the verification workflow. The successful candidate judges whether automated output is safe and correct before it reaches production, and retains licensed capacity to verify prescriptions when needed.

Key Responsibilities

- Translate the automation and system-integration roadmap into requirements, configuration, validation, and release.
- Serve as the technical authority for automation validation across LillyDirect Pharmacy: define the validation approach and acceptance criteria, and determine whether automation that touches prescription data passes validation before it is released.
- Recommend sequencing and prioritization of the automation and integration roadmap to pharmacy leadership, based on validation results, defect trends, and expected reductions in manual work.
- Execute testing and validation for automation that touches prescription data, and document outcomes as pharmacy records.
- Diagnose the root causes of automation accuracy gaps and manual rework across systems and workflows, and design and deliver corrective solutions measured against agreed targets.
- Own exception routing logic and workflow rules in partnership with the operations and quality teams.
- Serve as the pharmacy's technical counterpart to Lilly IT and technology partners on integration design, releases, and change control, representing pharmacy requirements and validation expectations.
- Manage the automation delivery plan, including timelines, dependencies, and resource needs, and provide effort and cost input to pharmacy leadership for roadmap and budget planning.
- Measure the operational impact of automation, including reductions in manual work and rework, and report results to pharmacy leadership to inform roadmap decisions.
- Partner with Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, and Risk Management where automation affects pharmacy records, deviation documentation, or inspection readiness.
- Verify accuracy of prescription orders and resolve issues with prescribers and patients as licensed capacity requires.
- Collaborate with internal teams (logistics, commercial operations, customer support, IT) to streamline processes and enhance patient satisfaction.
- Review and improve workflow processes to optimize efficiency and patient care.
- Contribute to the design and improvement of processes and systems that support pharmacy operations, including automation monitoring and reporting.
- Stay current on industry trends and technological advancements related to direct-to-patient pharmacy operations, and translate those into operational changes that drive state-of-the-art execution.
- Per the in-office schedule created by the pharmacy scheduler, this position will be expected to work scheduled shifts Monday through Friday, with a minimum of three days on site each week and up to two days worked remotely when appropriate. Remote work flexibility applies consistent with Lilly's remote work policy.

Basic Qualifications

- Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree.
- Active, unrestricted Indiana pharmacist license in good standing.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in pharmacy practice or pharmacy operations.

Additional Preferences

- Experience in a high-volume, centralized, or direct-to-patient pharmacy environment.
- Experience implementing or optimizing pharmacy automation, workflow automation, or system integrations.
- Experience with requirements definition, configuration, testing, validation, and release management in a regulated environment.
- Experience serving as the technical or validation authority for systems in a regulated environment.
- Experience with pharmacy management software, exception queues, and routing logic.
- Experience working with IT, engineering, or vendor technical teams on integration design and change control.
- Comfort measuring automation performance and documenting validation outcomes as pharmacy records.
- Willingness to obtain and maintain pharmacist licensure in additional states as the LillyDirect footprint expands.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Supervisory experience preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and communicate across levels of technical experts and senior leadership.
- Lilly may provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for this role for internal applicants only.
