About this role
Job Title: Technical Writer II Job Description
The Technical Writer II role focuses on creating, editing, and maintaining high-quality technical documentation for software and data solutions that support mobile applications, backend platforms, and complex system architectures. You will collaborate closely with technical implementation and software engineering teams to capture product requirements, software and system designs, and data flows, ensuring that documentation meets both engineering needs and quality management standards. This position offers the opportunity to work on innovative digital health and medical device technologies that directly impact people living with diabetes, while influencing documentation standards and processes across a highly collaborative R&D organization.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with technical implementation and software engineering teams to understand product documentation requirements for mobile applications, backend systems, APIs, data platforms, and system architecture.
- Create, edit, and maintain high-quality technical documentation, including software requirements, software design specifications, system and software architecture descriptions, and stakeholder-facing technical content.
- Detail software and data solutions, capturing end-to-end system behavior, interfaces, and dependencies in a clear and structured manner.
- Assist in the creation and submission of documentation required for compliance with the Quality Management System and other regulated industry standards.
- Support the standardization and simplification of technical writing processes, procedures, and style guidelines to ensure consistency across documentation.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the documentation development lifecycle, enabling efficient delivery of accurate and high-quality content across the organization.
- Assess audience needs for technical and procedural documentation, adjusting tone, structure, and technical terminology to ensure clarity and understanding for different stakeholder groups.
- Conduct document reviews with cross-functional stakeholders, collect feedback, and incorporate revisions to ensure the accuracy and completeness of technical documentation.
- Create technical illustrations such as data flow diagrams, component diagrams, and other visual representations of system architecture and data movement.
- Work closely with engineering, product, and quality teams in an Agile environment to align documentation timelines with development sprints and release cycles.
- Manage multiple documentation initiatives simultaneously, demonstrating strong ownership, accountability, and project management skills.
- Use tools such as Jira, GitHub, and documentation platforms to track work, manage version-controlled documentation, and support Agile workflows.
- Support documentation related to SRS (Software Requirements Specifications), SDS (Software Design Specifications), and other regulated documentation artifacts as needed.
- Partner with R&D teams to influence and refine documentation standards, best practices, and templates across the organization.
Essential Skills
- 35+ years of technical writing experience supporting software or highly technical environments.
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Software Engineering, Technical Communications, or a related discipline.
- Proven experience creating technical documentation for software applications, backend systems, APIs, data platforms, and system architecture.
- Strong understanding of front-end, backend, and end-to-end system architecture.
- Ability to understand complex technical ecosystems and independently produce requirements documentation, software design documentation, architecture diagrams, and stakeholder-facing technical content.
- Experience documenting APIs, software requirements, software design specifications, architecture, or data platforms.
- Ability to quickly learn complex technical concepts and translate them into clear, concise, and accurate documentation.
- Experience working in Agile environments, including Scrum and Kanban methodologies.
- Hands-on experience with tools such as Jira and GitHub, including version-controlled documentation processes.
- Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, product, and other technical teams.
- Demonstrated ownership, accountability, and project management capabilities in managing documentation projects from inception to completion.
- Experience with technical writing in regulated or highly structured environments, including working with SRS and SDS documentation.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in regulated industries such as medical devices, healthcare technology, or pharmaceuticals is preferred.
- Familiarity with Ketryx, eQMS platforms, and document control systems is preferred.
- Exposure to requirements management tools such as DOORS or similar systems is beneficial.
- Experience contributing to the development and improvement of documentation standards, processes, and style guidelines.
- Background in digital health, data platforms, or cloud-based software solutions is an advantage.
- Interest in working on products that directly impact patient outcomes, particularly in the context of diabetes care.
Work Environment
This is a fully remote position supporting software engineering and R&D teams in a highly regulated medical device and digital health environment. You will work standard business hours while collaborating closely with engineering, product, and quality organizations across time zones as needed. The work setting follows Agile software development practices, primarily using Scrum, with frequent cross-functional meetings, sprint ceremonies, and technical reviews. Your day-to-day activities will include a mix of documentation creation, stakeholder meetings, technical reviews, and architecture discussions, requiring regular interaction with engineers, product managers, and quality professionals. The environment is fast-paced and dynamic, with an expectation of strong ownership over multiple concurrent documentation initiatives and adherence to technical documentation best practices and quality management processes. The role offers long-term project stability, potential conversion opportunities, and the chance to contribute to impactful technology that supports people living with diabetes.
