AutoStore – moving things forward.
The Role:
AutoStore is hiring a Senior Structural Engineer who has successfully carried new products to market. We are looking for an engineer with experience developing and validating structural systems for high-volume products from concept to launch. The successful engineer will have owned structural designs through the challenges encountered during development and production, including fatigue failures, vibration issues, excessive deflection, load path optimization, certification requirements, and the difficult design trade-offs required to deliver robust products without compromising performance, manufacturability, or long-term reliability.
This individual will serve as a technical leader, owning structural analysis and validation activities for key portions of the AutoStore robot, grid/cube, charging systems, and related mechanical systems. They will be expected to balance strength, stiffness, weight, reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, and cost while delivering innovative solutions that can be successfully deployed on a global scale.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Structural System Ownership – Concept Through Production
- Lead the structural design, analysis, and validation of mechanical systems from concept through detailed design, simulation, testing, and production release.
- Own structural architecture, load path development, and engineering trade-offs balancing strength, stiffness, reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
- Perform structural calculations and simulations, including static, dynamic, vibration, fatigue, impact, and seismic analyses, as required.
- Develop and validate finite element models (FEA) and correlate analytical predictions with physical test results.
- Lead and execute root-cause investigations of structural failures, field issues, reliability concerns, and product performance deviations.
- Analyze and optimize structural components, assemblies, and systems for strength, stiffness, weight, durability, and service life.
- Own structural verification activities, including hand calculations, simulation, laboratory testing, and system-level validation.
- Partner closely with mechanical, electrical, firmware, software, manufacturing, quality, and systems engineering teams throughout product development.
- Develop structural solutions capable of withstanding demanding operational environments, repetitive loading, vibration, and long-term field use.
- Define and execute validation testing, including static load, fatigue, vibration, modal, impact, environmental, and life-cycle testing.
- Support product certification activities and ensure compliance with applicable engineering standards and regulatory requirements.
- Work with suppliers and manufacturing teams to ensure structural integrity is maintained throughout production and product lifecycle changes.
Key Qualifications:
- 9+ years of experience in structural or mechanical engineering with an emphasis on structural analysis and product development.
- Experience developing and validating structural systems from concept through production.
- Strong proficiency with finite element analysis tools such as Ansys Mechanical, Ansys Workbench, or equivalent simulation platforms.
- Experience performing static, dynamic, vibration, fatigue, modal, and impact analysis of mechanical structures.
- Strong understanding of load paths, stress and strain analysis, structural optimization, and failure mechanisms.
- Experience developing, correlating, and validating analytical and FEA models against physical test data.
- Strong understanding of material behavior in aluminum extrusions, steel structures, welded assemblies, bolted joints, castings, and machined components.
- Experience with fatigue life prediction, durability assessment, vibration analysis, and reliability engineering.
- Experience conducting structural verification through simulation, laboratory testing, and analytical methods.
- Working knowledge of engineering codes, standards, and best practices, including ISO, Eurocode, ASCE, ASTM, or other applicable standards.
- Experience with engineering analysis tools such as Ansys, Inventor, Mathcad Prime, and related structural engineering software.
- Demonstrated technical leadership, including technical decision-making, design reviews, problem solving, and mentoring.
- Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills with a hands-on engineering mindset.
- Master's degree in Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (relevant experience may substitute for formal education).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience developing robotics, automation equipment, autonomous systems, material handling equipment, or industrial machinery.
- Experience with lightweight structural systems, large mechanical assemblies, and high-duty-cycle products.
- Experience with modal analysis, vibration mitigation, and dynamic loading of moving systems.
- Experience evaluating floor loading, installation requirements, and operational loads in warehouse environments.
- Experience working within cross-functional product development teams spanning mechanical, electrical, controls, and software disciplines.
- Familiarity with point-cloud and reality-capture tools such as Cyclone 3DR.
- Experience with automated warehouse products preferred.
