Responsibilities

The Electrical & Controls Designer develops safe, coordinated, and constructible electrical and controls designs for industrial capital projects, from early scope and estimate development through detailed design, construction, and commissioning. The role prepares design documentation, supports industrial power and instrumentation work, and collaborates with Engineering and other disciplines to help projects move from design intent to reliable field implementation. The position focuses on physical design and documentation, not control-system programming or configuration.

• Develop FEL2/FEL3 scopes and estimates for industrial capital projects.
• Prepare and update electrical and controls design documents, including cable and conduit schedules, cable tray and control room plans, loop diagrams, installation details, I/O loading diagrams, and panel and cabinet layouts.
• Support electrical power design for systems and equipment such as power distribution equipment, MCCs, VFDs, transformers, and switchgear.
• Design or support lighting, grounding, and electrical heat-tracing systems.
• Apply electrical area-classification and hazardous-location requirements to design work.
• Support construction, checkout, and commissioning by responding to field questions and helping resolve design issues.
• Coordinate design activities with electrical, instrumentation, process, and other engineering disciplines.
• Produce accurate, practical documentation that supports safe installation and commissioning.

Qualifications

• Candidates may qualify through any one of the following pathways:
o An electrical or electronics related bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of electrical design experience.
o An electrical or electronics related associate’s degree and at least 5 years of electrical design experience.
o At least 7 years of progressive electrical design experience. A degree is not required for this pathway.
• Ability to develop FEL2/FEL3 scopes and estimates, execute detailed electrical and controls design, and support construction and checkout in coordination with Engineering.
• Experience with electrical design deliverables such as cable and conduit schedules, tray plans, loop diagrams, panel and cabinet layouts, and installation details.
• Experience designing industrial power systems, including MCCs, VFDs, transformers, switchgear, lighting, grounding, and electrical heat tracing.
• Working knowledge of electrical area classifications and hazardous-location requirements.
• Commitment to safe, code-compliant design and project execution.
• Familiarity with applicable electrical codes, standards, and project requirements, such as NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code), relevant IEEE and NEMA standards, and applicable ISA or IEC standards for hazardous locations.

Desired

• Familiarity with electrical design tools such as MicroStation, Bluebeam, or AutoCAD.
• Exposure to construction support, checkout, or commissioning in an industrial setting.
• Strong communication skills when working with Engineering and other project disciplines.
