Background

The software industry is increasingly adopting Rust for backend systems because it combines high performance with strong memory-safety guarantees. At the same time, AI agents are becoming more capable of assisting with complex software development tasks, including code migration.

This thesis will explore how AI can support the migration of legacy code to Rust. The work will focus on translating selected components written in C/C++ or the current SIP language, while preserving their existing functionality. It will also consider how to guide AI agents so that they use resources efficiently and produce reliable code.

Goal

The goal is to assess how effectively AI agents and large language models can assist with migrating legacy code to Rust while maintaining functional parity. The thesis will also develop and evaluate an approach for improving the migration workflow. This includes limiting token usage and reducing inaccurate or fabricated outputs (“hallucinations”) during code rewriting.
