Job Summary:
We're building a small battery-powered smart camera for our stores and piloting it in one store in early 2027. We're looking for a mechanical design intern to own the camera's 3D-printed housing, from first sketch to a print-ready design used on hundreds of units.
The housing holds:
• a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W
• a 12MP camera module with an M12 lens
• a custom power-management board with replaceable batteries
• an anti-glare screen in front of the lens
You'll work directly with our hardware engineers. You'll go through several print-and-test iterations, and your design will be installed in a live store.
Key Responsibilities:
· Design a compact, robust enclosure in CAD around the camera module, Pi Zero 2 W, power board, battery compartment, M12 lens, and glare screen
· Design the glare screen/hood so it cuts reflections without blocking the lens's wide (~80–90°) field of view
· Allow tool-free battery replacement and access to the lens for focusing during installation, plus a status LED window and service button
· Design store-mounting features (shelf/fixture mounting) and make the housing durable for a retail floor
· Print, assemble, and test prototypes; refine tolerances, fit, and assembly time
· Hand off production-ready files (STEP/STL, print settings) and a short assembly guide
Qualifications:
· Currently pursuing a university and/or college education in Canada focused on Mechanical, Mechatronics, Industrial Design or a related engineering program
· Strong 3D CAD skills (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, or similar)
· Hands-on experience designing for 3D printing (FDM and/or resin): tolerances, wall thickness, supports, print orientation
· Experience with enclosure features: snap-fits, bosses, heat-set inserts, screw mounts, cable routing
· Comfortable working from mechanical drawings and STEP models of electronics (PCB outlines, mounting holes, connectors)
Nice to have:
· Enclosure design for electronics or battery-powered devices
· Basic optics (field of view, lens/hood clearance, glare control)
· Basic electronics knowledge, or Raspberry Pi / maker projects
· Portfolio of designed and printed parts
What You’ll Gain:
- Accountability and execution experience aligned with key business strategies
- Exposure to cross-functional team collaboration
- Coaching and mentorship opportunities
- Performance feedback and leadership development
- Own a real hardware product end to end, with a design that goes live in a store
- Work with a small, fast-moving engineering team
- Build a portfolio piece spanning CAD, prototyping, and field deployment
To apply: send your resume and a short portfolio (CAD screenshots or photos of printed parts).
Please note: Compensation will be based on year of study, prior internship experience, and academic performance.
The pay range for this position is between $31,600.00 - $35,400.00
