About this role
Job Title: Construction Materials Technician Job Description
This entry-level Construction Materials Technician role offers hands-on experience in testing construction materials, primarily concrete, in a laboratory and field setting. You will receive in-house training to perform concrete testing for slump, density, and moisture, support project teams with accurate documentation, and contribute to safe and efficient construction projects. This position is ideal for individuals interested in civil, geotechnical, or environmental careers who want to build a strong technical foundation and grow into roles with increasing responsibility.
Responsibilities
- Perform concrete testing in the laboratory and field, including measurements for slump, density, and moisture content, following established procedures and standards.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with project managers, engineering technicians, client representatives, contractor representatives, and other stakeholders regarding construction site conditions, project requirements, and testing, observation, and inspection activities.
- Transport material samples from project sites to the laboratory, ensuring all samples include accurate identifying documentation for further testing and analysis.
- Tabulate, prepare, and submit data and observations in both written and digital formats, including daily field reports and test results, for timely transmittal to the project manager.
- Maintain, clean, and organize testing equipment, vehicles, and work areas to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations.
- Assist with scheduling and dispatching technicians to project sites as needed to support project demands and ensure proper coverage.
- Adhere to strict safety standards at all times, including proper handling of equipment and materials, and compliance with company and industry safety protocols.
- Provide clear, accurate documentation of findings and test results to support engineering decisions and project quality control.
- Participate in progressive training and assume increasing levels of responsibility in work assignments as skills and experience develop.
- Use computer systems and software to log daily field reports, send emails, and manage digital documentation related to testing and project activities.
Essential Skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with project managers, technicians, clients, and contractors.
- Strong computer skills, including the ability to log and submit daily field reports and communicate via email.
- Ability to follow detailed procedures for construction materials testing, including concrete testing for slump, density, and moisture.
- Willingness to learn and follow strict safety standards in laboratory and field environments.
- Ability to maintain and clean equipment, vehicles, and work areas to support safe and efficient operations.
- Capability to transport material samples and associated documentation between project sites and the laboratory.
- Bachelors or associate degree in civil engineering, geology, geoscience, or a related field, or equivalent education in a relevant discipline.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- ACI Level certification (such as ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician) is a strong plus.
- Previous construction materials testing experience, particularly in a laboratory environment, is a plus.
- Familiarity with construction materials testing (CMT) practices, especially related to concrete testing and inspection.
- Experience or exposure to the use of nuclear density gauges or nuclear gauges for materials testing is beneficial.
- Interest in pursuing a career in civil, geotechnical, or environmental fields.
- Motivation to obtain additional certifications and training, supported by employer-paid programs.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a field and laboratory team.
Work Environment
You will work in a combination of laboratory and field environments focused on construction materials testing, with a primary emphasis on concrete. The role involves hands-on use of testing equipment such as concrete testing tools and, where applicable, nuclear density gauges. You will regularly travel between project sites and the laboratory to collect and transport material samples. The work schedule typically follows standard construction and field hours, which may include early starts and occasional extended days depending on project needs. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety standards, including proper handling of materials, equipment, and testing instruments. You will use computers and digital tools daily to log reports, manage data, and communicate with project teams. The organization supports professional growth through in-house training, paid certifications, and additional technical development opportunities. As an employee-owned firm with profit-sharing opportunities over time, the culture encourages long-term engagement, shared success, and progression into roles with greater responsibility.
