About this role
The Drive Inverter team designs the power electronics that move Tesla’s cars. Delivering hundreds of kilowatts from the battery to the motor, the drive inverter sets acceleration, efficiency, cost, and reliability. It integrates high-voltage power electronics, low-voltage circuits, signal integrity, functional safety, and mechanical packaging. Power electronics engineers on the drive inverter team deliver component designs that set the system-level performance of the industry’s highest production volume traction inverters.
Roles are availabile at mutiple seniority levels based on experience such as Engineer, Sr., Staff, etc.
- End-to-end ownership of inverter hardware and circuit designs, from specification and architecture through schematic capture, PCB layout, prototype, board bring-up, validation, reliability and functional testing, and high-volume manufacturing
- Measure and analyze switching waveforms, losses, and thermal performance
- Design, validate, and debug signal integrity, EMI/EMC, and communication interfaces at the component, inverter, and vehicle level
- Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, PCBA, reliability, manufacturing, firmware, and test engineering to optimize inverter switching, loss, reliability, and thermal behavior
- Collaborate with suppliers to develop next-generation electronic components and designs
- Solve challenges at scale to achieve industry-leading reliability and efficiency
- Bachlor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, related engineering discipline, or equivalent experience
- Digital and analog circuit design, including high-voltage circuits, power supplies, and switched-mode / DC-DC converters
- Double-pulse testing and thermal characterization, and gate drive and protection circuit design for high-voltage power semiconductors
- Printed circuit board design (e.g. Altium) and bring-up: debugging, soldering, wiring, and mechanical assembly
- Familiarity with lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, function generators, and power supplies
- Signal integrity, high-speed PCB layout, and noise mitigation
- Scripting for data processing and test automation, such as MATLAB, Python, or LabVIEW, including lab-equipment automation (GPIB/SCPI/VISA)
- Familiarity with embedded firmware, microcontrollers, and their peripherals. Basic control theory, including sensor bandwidths and filtering
- Experience with electric machines, field-oriented control, and thermal design
