Compensation Data

$135,000 - $210,000 commensurate with education and experience

Mission

Lead marine structural engineering for berth and waterfront infrastructure from concept development through construction and handover. Responsibilities include structural system selection, design of berthing and mooring structures, marine equipment specification and procurement, and on-site supervision of piling and structural construction. Seal permit and construction drawings for berth structures.

Key Accountabilities

Structural analysis and design

- Berthing energy and fender selection to PIANC guidance; fender panel, chain and support design

- Mooring analysis and hardware selection to UFC 4-159-03 and OCIMF practice, including quick release hooks and capstans

- Pile design: axial and lateral capacity, p-y and t-z analysis, group effects, drivability assessment

- Structural design to ASCE 7, AISC 360, ACI 318 and UFC 4-152-01, including hurricane wind and flood loads

- Durability: corrosion allowance, coatings, cathodic protection, concrete cover and mix design for saltwater marine exposure

- Fatigue and serviceability of fender and hook support, walkways, pipe supports and access structures

- Safety features: access ladders, escape routes, lighting and navigation aids on the structures

Software and analysis tools

- Structural frame analysis (for example RISA, STAAD, SAP2000 or equivalent)

- Pile analysis (for example LPILE, GROUP, wave equation software for drivability)

- Coordinate structural engineering inputs and outputs with mooring analysis software and the project's computer-aided design (CAD) or building information modelling (BIM) environment.

Port Project Contribution

- Evaluate berth structural system alternatives and develop preliminary structural sizing. Define overwater coverage and the structural footprint, and prepare the structural analyses required for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Section 408 review.

- Lead the detailed structural design of dolphins, platforms, walkways, and bulkheads. Prepare construction drawings, structural calculations, and technical specifications, and perform constructability analysis.

- Material take-offs, specifications and vendor evaluation for piles, fenders, bollards and loading equipment.

- Supervision of pile driving and structural erection: drivability analysis, testing, welding and concrete quality, tolerances.

- Load testing of mooring equipment, punch list, as-built structural records, inspection and maintenance manual.

- Procurement: Prepare technical specifications for steel and concrete piles, fenders, bollards, quick-release hooks, and fittings, together with material take-offs, pile schedules, and bills of quantities. Develop the long-lead procurement strategy for piles and fender systems, aligning delivery windows with the construction schedule. Perform technical evaluations of vendors; review vendor drawings and calculations, factory acceptance documentation, and test certificates.

- Construction supervision: Review piling method statements, hammer selection, and pile-driving criteria, including refusal and set criteria. Supervise and interpret dynamic pile testing using PDA and CAPWAP, together with any static load tests. Inspect welding, splices, coatings, cathodic protection installation, concrete placement, curing and testing in marine conditions, and grouting of pile connections. Verify survey records for pile positions, verticality, batter, and structural tolerances. Review temporary works involving barge-mounted cranes, templates, access, and lifting plans. Assess nonconformances, develop repair designs, and provide field engineering support.

- Project closeout: Support load testing and commissioning of mooring and fender equipment. Prepare as-built dimensional records and structural documentation and develop the inspection and maintenance manual for marine structures, including inspection intervals and acceptance criteria.
