At Remitly, we believe everyone deserves the freedom to access, move, and manage their money wherever life takes them. Since 2011, we have helped customers send money globally through secure, simple, and reliable services. Whether they are supporting loved ones, growing a business, or pursuing opportunities abroad, our customers rely on us to move their money with confidence.
About the role:
As Senior Engineering Manager for Global Transfer Flow, you will lead the engineers who build the experience customers use to prepare and submit a money transfer. The team owns the customer journey, from selecting a recipient and payment method to submitting the transfer, along with the APIs and backend coordination that support it.
You will shape the team’s multi-year technical strategy and lead a major modernization effort. Today, regional variations have created duplicated logic and close dependencies between the user interface and business rules. You will guide the transition to a shared, configurable platform that supports different market requirements and makes new experiences easier to build.
This platform will support remittances today and extend to products such as small business payments, lending, and stored balances, as well as channels such as WhatsApp and conversational AI. You will help the team use AI effectively in its daily work while maintaining the accuracy, security, and reliability that financial services require.
The transfer experience: Fast, clear, and consistent customer journeys across mobile and web, including steps customers may need to return to after submission.
Transfer APIs and data models: Shared services that capture transfer details, check that they are valid, and prepare a transaction for submission across supported sending and receiving markets.
Reusable components: Recipient selection, payment selection, and other parts of the journey that product teams can use in their own experiences, developed with partner platform teams.
You will:
- Hire, coach, and develop engineers. Set clear expectations, manage performance, and build a team that reflects Remitly’s values.
- Own the technical strategy and lead complex architecture changes across teams. Modernize transfer APIs and data models so customers can provide information in different sequences, with consistent validation in backend services.
- Guide the move from separate regional implementations to configurable workflows, with backend services managing progress and determining the next step across mobile, web, conversational, and partner experiences.
- Partner with infrastructure and domain teams to build reusable components and development tools that help other teams deliver complete customer journeys.
- Improve reliability through monitoring, automated testing, and simulations that help engineering, quality assurance, and product teams identify issues before release.
- Work with Product, Design, and Analytics to set priorities and measurable goals, including faster transfer submission, lower latency, and faster experimentation.
- Own delivery, staffing, and quarterly planning. Coordinate dependencies, clarify ownership, and resolve priorities with partner teams and engineering leaders.
- Champion responsible use of AI coding tools to improve productivity, including generating workflow code from structured specifications, with appropriate review and validation.
You have:
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including technical leadership of full-stack systems, API design, and client-server interactions.
- 5+ years of recent experience hiring and managing engineering teams, including coaching and performance management.
- Experience leading architecture changes in a large codebase shared by multiple teams, such as separating tightly coupled components, introducing configuration-driven workflows, or moving business logic to backend services.
- Expertise in a backend or full-stack language such as Go, Kotlin, Java, or TypeScript, and experience building secure, scalable systems using cloud infrastructure such as AWS.
- Sound judgment in applying AI to software development and helping teams adopt AI tools safely and effectively. Experience applying AI to product features is a plus.
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience. A master’s degree is preferred.
Nice to have:
- Experience with mobile and web architecture, including React Native or React, server-driven user interfaces, or workflow orchestration.
- Experience building software development kits, frameworks, or internal platforms used by other engineering teams.
- Experience in payments, fintech, or another regulated industry where customers rely on accurate, secure services.
- Experience running experiments at scale using A/B tests and feature flags.
