About this role
Job Title: Staff Accountant Job Description
The Staff Accountant manages the full spectrum of day-to-day accounting activities in a small, growing organization, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll support, general ledger work, and month-end close. This role plays a key part in transitioning payroll processes to a new platform, modernizing manual accounting workflows, and connecting operational systems such as ServiceTitan with the accounting environment in Sage 50. The position offers broad ownership across the accounting cycle, close collaboration with operations and leadership, and a unique opportunity to learn from a long-tenured incumbent while helping preserve institutional knowledge and improve processes.
Responsibilities
- Manage daily accounts payable activities, ensuring vendor invoices are accurately recorded and reflected in the accounting system.
- Handle day-to-day accounts receivable responsibilities, working closely with internal billing staff to maintain accurate customer records and timely collections.
- Support payroll processes by providing accurate payroll data, assisting with payroll administration, and helping transition to a new payroll platform.
- Prepare and enter journal entries and other accounting information into Sage 50, maintaining complete and accurate general ledger records.
- Participate in the month-end close process, including reconciliations and preparation of monthly financial information.
- Collaborate with the external accounting firm on validation of financial data and monthly financial reporting activities.
- Work with financial and operational information flowing between ServiceTitan and Sage 50 to ensure data integrity and proper integration.
- Help identify, refine, and improve accounting workflows, particularly those that are manual or rely on disconnected systems.
- Participate closely in the implementation and rollout of a new payroll solution, providing accounting and operational input.
- Partner with operations and leadership to improve process efficiency and support greater automation across the accounting function.
- Learn existing processes from the retiring incumbent and help document and preserve institutional knowledge while modernizing workflows.
- Operate comfortably across accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and close activities within a smaller organizational environment.
- Support construction and prevailing wage accounting needs as required, ensuring compliance and accurate cost tracking where applicable.
Essential Skills
- Practical, hands-on payroll experience and comfort supporting payroll data and processes, particularly during a transition to a new payroll platform.
- Experience managing accounts payable in a small office environment, with strong attention to accuracy and timeliness.
- Experience handling accounts receivable functions, including coordination with billing personnel and maintaining accurate customer account information.
- Ability to prepare and enter general ledger journal entries and maintain accurate accounting records.
- Experience supporting month-end close and contributing to the preparation of monthly financial information.
- Comfort working across multiple accounting functions rather than specializing exclusively in general ledger or financial reporting.
- Ability to work effectively with an external accounting firm to validate information and support monthly financial reporting.
- Flexible learning mindset, with the ability to operate in a partially manual accounting environment while helping modernize it.
- Experience working with an accounting platform; Sage 50 experience is strongly preferred but not strictly required.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in a high-ownership, small-office role.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Sage 50 and Peachtree experience preferred.
- ServiceTitan experience preferred but not required.
- Construction or subcontractor accounting experience is advantageous but not required.
- Familiarity with construction accounting concepts and prevailing wage considerations is beneficial.
- Interest in process improvement, automation, and modernizing accounting workflows.
- Ability to collaborate closely with operations leadership, dispatch/CSR staff, and billing personnel in a team-oriented environment.
