About this role

The Sales Intern sits inside the earliest stages of Cogent Analytics' sales process, where the outcome of every downstream sale is actually decided. This role exists to show, firsthand, how identifying an ideal client profile (ICP), building a prospect database, and engaging that database correctly drive revenue and growth, and how getting any one of those wrong drags down sales performance for the entire organization.
The intern will work side by side with sales leadership day-to-day and will be exposed to the outside sales team (Regional Vice Presidents), but will not travel or spend time in the field. This is an inside seat on the machinery that makes outside sales possible.

Responsibilities

- Marketing exposure. Spend time with the marketing team observing how it works to grow the business, including how an ideal client profile and a client database get built in the first place.

- Hands-on database work . Get directly into the prospect database and perform actual database maintenance — not a tour of it, but real upkeep work.

- Shadow inside sales. Sit with the inside sales team, watch outbound calls get made, and see firsthand how the database is used to secure client appointments.

- Shadow sales management. Observe sales management's engagement with both clients and the outside sales team, and how management uses the database to run that engagement.

- Connect database work to RVP time efficiency. Take on hands-on responsibility for tracking outside sales team (RVP) time management, and tie database maintenance work directly to how efficiently RVPs use their time in the field.

What You Will Learn

The internship is built around one continuous thread, not a set of disconnected rotations: marketing defines who the ideal client is, the database captures and organizes that population, inside sales engages the database to generate appointments, and outside sales (RVPs) converts those appointments into revenue. The intern will see that thread run end to end — and will see what happens to sales performance when any link in it is executed poorly (a weak ICP, a neglected database, inconsistent outbound calling, or RVPs whose time isn't managed well).

By the end of the internship, the intern should be able to explain, with specific examples from Cogent Analytics, how disciplined database and marketing work upstream translates into revenue and growth downstream, and how sloppiness at any stage shows up as lost sales.

Ideal Candidate

Best suited for students majoring in Sales, Marketing, or Business Administration . The role rewards someone who is:

- Comfortable being hands-on with data — this is real database maintenance, not observation only

- Curious about how the pieces of a sales organization connect, rather than looking for a single, narrow task

- Willing to sit in on outbound calling and management conversations and pay attention to how they're run

- Organized enough to manage recurring, detail-heavy work (database upkeep, time-tracking data) without losing accuracy

Academic Credit Justification

This internship gives a Sales, Marketing, or Business Administration student direct, supervised exposure to the full front end of a sales organization: marketing strategy, ideal client profile development, database management, inside sales execution, and sales management oversight of an outside sales force. The student performs real, applied work (database maintenance, exposure to outbound calling and appointment-setting, time-management analysis of the outside sales team) under the direct supervision of sales leadership — not passive observation.

The internship is structured to let the student trace one measurable business outcome (revenue generation) back through each function that contributes to it, which maps directly to coursework in sales, marketing, and business administration programs covering customer acquisition, CRM/database management, and sales operations.
