The Assistant Electrical Designer supports a multi-disciplinary project team by contributing to planning, site evaluations, analytical designs, report preparation, and construction documentation for a diverse portfolio of telecommunications projects. This role focuses on designing and modeling physical pathway infrastructure, equipment layouts, and structured cabling systems while adhering to established design and drafting standards. The position requires proficiency with CAD and BIM tools, especially Revit, and involves close collaboration with project managers, engineers, and other designers to deliver accurate, timely, and coordinated design documentation.
Responsibilities
- Assist in various phases of project planning, site evaluations, analytical design work, report preparation, and construction documentation for telecommunications projects.
- Design and model a range of telecommunication project types, including inside and outside plant physical pathway infrastructure, equipment plan layouts, and structured cabling layouts.
- Lead the initial setup of telecommunications Revit models at the start of projects, ensuring that model structures and standards meet project requirements for the telecom design team.
- Prepare detailed engineering drawings from rough sketches, verbal instructions, notes, and general engineering information using Revit and other CAD software programs.
- Follow all applicable company, client, and project design and drafting standards to maintain consistency and quality across deliverables.
- Support a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques, including determining drawing sequence and presentation, refining rough sketches, sizing system components, and performing calculations for non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.
- Produce initial designs or sketches and provide redline and mark-up revisions on ongoing projects with limited engineering oversight, ensuring clarity and constructability.
- Apply relevant design codes and specifications to meet technical and regulatory requirements for telecommunications and electrical design.
- Complete and review design drawings within the defined scope, budget, and schedule, and perform project tasks within budgeted hours and established deadlines.
- Organize, track, and maintain all revisions of project drawings and related project information using prescribed methods and standards to ensure accurate documentation and version control.
- Coordinate telecommunications BIM models with other disciplines and collaborate with the overall project BIM coordinator to achieve integrated and conflict-free models.
- Monitor and maintain telecommunications model health and data integrity for assigned projects, identifying and resolving issues that could affect design quality or coordination.
- Collaborate effectively with project managers, engineers, and designers in a multi-disciplinary team environment to resolve design or drawing issues and meet project objectives.
- Perform other related design and drafting duties as assigned to support project and team needs.
- Comply with all organizational policies, procedures, and standards related to design, documentation, and project delivery.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in drafting technology or a related field and at least 2 years of related experience; or an associates degree and at least 3 years of related experience; or a minimum of 4 years of progressive detailing and design experience.
- Strong understanding and hands-on experience with design software such as AutoCAD and MicroStation for developing design deliverables.
- Proficiency with Revit and other CAD tools to prepare and manage telecommunications and electrical design models.
- Ability to work with both 2D and 3D applications to create accurate engineering drawings and models.
- Basic knowledge of design principles, engineering calculations, and design systems relevant to electrical and telecommunications disciplines.
- Basic understanding of the theory and practices of the primary engineering discipline and fundamental concepts of related disciplines as they impact assigned work.
- Capability to operate discipline-specific design software necessary to execute production tasks efficiently and accurately.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to address technical challenges and design issues.
- High level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency in drawings and documentation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey technical information clearly and collaborate effectively with project teams.
- Ability to work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, and designers in a multi-disciplinary environment to resolve design and drawing issues and meet project objectives.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with telecommunications design, including physical pathway infrastructure, equipment layouts, and structured cabling systems.
- Familiarity with power distribution and electrical distribution design concepts.
- Exposure to GIS tools for design or documentation purposes.
- Experience with SolidWorks and mechanical design concepts is beneficial for projects involving interdisciplinary coordination.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel for calculations, data organization, and supporting design documentation.
- Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs and adapt to evolving project technologies and standards.
Work Environment
