Software Development Engineer II

Introduction to the team

Our Technology Team partners with teams across Expedia Group to create innovative products, services, and tools to deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and our employees. A singular technology platform powered by data and machine learning provides secure, differentiated, and personalized experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.

The Software Development Engineer II position is part of the Servicing team, which builds the agentic AI systems that power traveler self-service experiences across all Expedia brands and partners. In this role, you will design, build, and operate the agents and supporting infrastructure that enable travelers to resolve complex servicing needs end-to-end — without human intervention. This includes working on agent orchestration, tool integration, LLM-powered reasoning pipelines, and the backend services that make these experiences reliable at scale. You will collaborate closely with Product, XD, and Program Management to shape both the technical direction and the traveler experience.

As an SDE II, you will own features end-to-end, contribute to technical design, and help raise the bar for engineering quality through rigorous testing, observability, and operational excellence.

In this role, you will:

- Design, implement, and maintain reliable, scalable, and secure services and components using Expedia Group's standard technologies, including clean APIs, robust data models, and well-factored low-level designs.
- Deliver high-quality production code through test automation, code reviews, and continuous integration practices, contributing to services that operate reliably at scale across multiple products or domains.
- Collaborate with peers, product managers, technical program managers, and other partners to refine requirements, break down complex problems, and deliver incremental value in an Agile environment.
- Instrument services to monitor performance, reliability, and availability; triage and resolve production issues; and participate in on-call or support activities to improve system stability and operational excellence.
- Apply secure coding practices, follow engineering standards and patterns, and contribute to improving shared libraries, tooling, or platforms that accelerate development for multiple teams.
- Work with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows to enhance developer productivity and product capabilities, including safely integrating and operating AI/ML‑enabled solutions that improve outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field; or equivalent practical experience in software development.
- Professional experience in software engineering building, testing, and operating backend, frontend, or full-stack services or applications, including ownership of at least one significant service or feature in production.
- Proficiency in at least one modern programming language used at Expedia Group and familiarity with service-oriented or microservices architectures, including API design, data modeling, and low-level system design.
- Experience with standard software engineering practices such as version control, automated testing, code review, debugging, and monitoring in a collaborative, Agile team environment.
- Familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience designing and evolving services or components that support multiple use cases or products, including effective API contracts, data models, and integration patterns across teams.
- Track record of improving performance, reliability, or cost efficiency of production systems through data-driven analysis, observability, and systematic incident prevention and resolution.
- Hands-on experience with cloud-based infrastructure, deployment pipelines, and configuration management to confidently build, release, and operate services at scale.
- Demonstrated ability to leverage AI-assisted development tools, code generation, or intelligent automation to improve engineering velocity while maintaining code quality and safety.
- Experience incorporating or consuming AI/ML‑enabled capabilities within applications or services, including safely integrating and operating these solutions in production environments.
