Job Description:
About HPE Networking
HPE Networking is helping transform the networking industry by shifting the focus from connectivity alone to creating better digital experiences. Our AI-native networking platform combines the strengths of Juniper Networks and HPE Aruba Networking to help customers improve cloud connectivity, network operations, security, simplicity, and service assurance.
HPE Networking Sales Engineers are technical specialists who help customers understand their business and technology challenges and apply networking solutions that accelerate time-to-value.
About the role
The Associate Sales Engineering (ASE) Program provides hands-on experience and development opportunities for individuals beginning a career in technical sales. You will work alongside experienced Sales Engineers and other talented team members while helping customers achieve their business and technology objectives.
As you progress through the program, you will develop the skills to serve as a technical lead in customer engagements. You will learn how to understand customer requirements, networking and security constraints, and business priorities, then apply HPE Networking solutions to address those needs.
This role is ideal for someone who combines technical curiosity with strong communication and relationship-building skills. You do not need to be a finished technologist or hold a computer science or engineering degree. We are looking for individuals with the curiosity to learn, the initiative to explore how technology works, and the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
What you will do
This 48-week program will build foundational knowledge of networking concepts, develop pre-sales skills, and provide opportunities to contribute across multiple areas of the Sales Engineering organization, including:
- Participate in program enhancements and the deployment of best practices.
- Respond to technical pre-sales inquiries from partners and internal stakeholders.
- Collaborate on projects that expand your product knowledge and understanding of sales engineering practices.
- Attend and assist with onsite and remote customer presentations and engagements.
- Support solution demonstrations and technical discussions.
- Prepare technical responses to customer proposals and follow up on customer questions.
- Participate in developing lab proof-of-concept configurations based on defined test plans.
- Deliver training sessions and workshops.
- Learn customer requirements and help develop solutions aligned with their business needs.
- Build familiarity with both Juniper Networks and HPE Aruba Networking technologies.
At the completion of the program, you will have developed foundational pre-sales capabilities and pursued certifications across the Juniper and Aruba technology portfolios.
Program experience
The program includes:
- Foundational training across the Juniper and Aruba technology portfolios during the first 12 weeks.
- New-hire training during the first few weeks of the program.
- Weekly hands-on labs.
- Weekly demonstration practice.
- Biweekly mentoring activities.
- Participation in HPE Tech Jam.
- Guest speakers and additional learning opportunities.
- Third-party pre-sales coaching through Mastering Technical Sales.
- Participation in Sales Kick-Off activities.
What we are looking for
You may be a strong fit if you:
- Have independently taught yourself a language, tool, technology, or skill.
- Have explored technology through a home lab, hackathon, personal project, certification, or similar activity.
- Have experience in a customer-facing role such as retail, hospitality, sales, support, or service.
- Have led a team, club, shift, organization, project, event, or similar activity.
- Have taught, tutored, trained, mentored, or presented to others.
- Are comfortable working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Can manage multiple deadlines and changing priorities.
- Work effectively as part of a team and are willing to learn collaboratively.
Minimum qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in any field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Early-career experience, including up to two years of experience in sales engineering, network operations, technical support, customer service, sales, leadership, or another related area.
- Demonstrated self-directed learning, such as independently acquiring a skill, tool, certification, or technology.
- Strong interpersonal, teamwork, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States. Employment eligibility will be verified in accordance with applicable law.
- Willingness to relocate to Durham, North Carolina.
- Willingness to relocate after program completion to an available Sales Engineer position identified by HPE Networking field leadership. The post-program location may be anywhere in the United States.
Desired qualifications
- Degree or coursework in engineering, computer science, information technology, networking, or a related technical field.
- General knowledge of computer networking concepts and solutions.
- Familiarity with cloud networking or operating-system virtualization technologies.
- Experience with Python or a similar scripting language.
- A home lab, personal technology project, or independently earned certification.
- Leadership experience, such as serving as a team captain, resident assistant, club officer, shift lead, volunteer leader, ROTC participant, Scout leader, or in an equivalent role.
- Internship experience, whether technical or nontechnical.
- Experience founding or leading a project, club, side business, event, or similar initiative.
Mobility commitment
ASEs hired into the Durham cohort must relocate to Durham, North Carolina, with HPE-sponsored relocation support in accordance with applicable company policy.
Successful completion of the 48-week program requires continued willingness to relocate to an available Sales Engineer position identified by HPE Networking field leadership. The post-program position may be located anywhere in the United States. Relocation to the identified position is a condition of continued participation in the program and is not guaranteed to be in Durham.
Career growth
This program is designed as a long-term investment in your technical sales career:
- Hire: Sales Engineer Level 1, with compensation based on the applicable Durham-based Associate Sales Engineer band.
- Program completion: After completing the 48-week program, participants are encouraged to pursue posted Sales Engineer Level 2 or higher opportunities.
- Continued growth: Advancement may occur as experience, technical expertise, and scope of responsibility increase.
