Role Description/Purpose
The British Council is the UK's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We build connections, understanding, and trust between people in the UK and other countries through our work in English language teaching, education, arts, and culture. Operating in more than 100 countries, we reach millions of people each year through our programmes, services, and partnerships, creating opportunities and changing lives through international collaboration and mutual understanding.
In Algeria, the British Council delivers a range of English language courses for primary and secondary Young Learners at our teaching centre in Algiers. Young Learners represent a significant proportion of our student community, and we are seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated, and experienced Teacher of English who is passionate about supporting children's learning and development.
As a Teacher of English, you will provide learners with a rewarding, engaging and stimulating learning experience that supports their language development and personal growth. You will play a key role in promoting high standards of teaching and learning, ensuring that every class is delivered effectively and in line with best practice in English Language Teaching (ELT).
Working within a professional and collaborative teaching environment, you will support the British Council’s global English strategy by delivering lessons to the highest standards of quality and learner engagement. Through your teaching, you will contribute to enhancing the British Council’s reputation as a world-leading authority in English Language Teaching and help learners achieve successful outcomes.
The role also offers opportunities for continuous professional development, encouraging you to further develop your teaching expertise, stay informed about current ELT methodologies and share best practices with colleagues. You will be part of a team committed to innovation, collaboration and excellence in education, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement and learner-centred teaching.
Beyond the classroom, you will support the wider aims of the British Council and its cultural relations mission by helping people build confidence in English, develop valuable skills and strengthen international connections through education.
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic English language professional who is committed to delivering exceptional learner experiences and making a positive impact through education.
Role Accountabilities
As a Teacher of English, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality English language learning experiences that inspire, engage and support learners in achieving their goals. You will plan, prepare and deliver effective lessons tailored to the needs of diverse learner groups, taking into account different learning styles, individual needs and modes of study. Through your teaching, you will ensure that learning is both enjoyable and impactful, while meeting the British Council’s Global Teaching Standards and the expectations of students and stakeholders.
You will closely monitor learner progress, providing regular feedback and guidance to help students achieve their learning objectives. By encouraging learner autonomy and confidence, you will support students in taking ownership of their development and making meaningful progress throughout their learning journey.
Maintaining the highest standards of teaching practice is central to this role. Beyond the classroom, you will contribute to the wider activities of the teaching centre and support the successful delivery of local and organisational objectives. Working collaboratively with colleagues, you will participate in staff meetings and contribute to the development, evaluation and continuous improvement of courses, teaching materials and related services. Your input will help ensure that teaching provision remains relevant, effective and responsive to the needs of learners.

This includes maintaining effective communication with students, sharing relevant information and ensuring that teaching-related administrative tasks are completed accurately and to agreed standards.
Building positive and professional relationships with learners, customers and colleagues will be an important part of the role. You will help students gain greater awareness and understanding of the UK and its values, while creating opportunities for intercultural learning and meaningful cultural exchange both inside and outside the classroom.
As a member of the British Council team, you will uphold the highest standards of professionalism and demonstrate the organisation’s values and behaviours in all aspects of your work.
