Job Title: Embedded Software Engineer Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled Embedded Software Engineer to design, develop, and integrate software for embedded systems across the full development lifecycle. You will work from requirements analysis and architecture design through implementation, testing, verification, and validation, with a strong emphasis on delivering robust, reliable, and thoroughly tested solutions. In addition to hands-on technical development, you will support proposal efforts by translating requirements into actionable work tasks and providing accurate effort estimates, while clearly presenting and explaining software solutions to internal teams and customers.
Responsibilities
- Perform full lifecycle development for embedded systems, including implementation, unit testing, integration, and formal sell-off testing.
- Review customer requirements, translate them into detailed specifications, and produce technical documentation, designs, operational concepts, and effort estimates.
- Collaborate closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration of software with electronic components, boards, and embedded hardware.
- Develop and execute test plans and procedures, perform debugging and troubleshooting, and ensure compliance with functional and system specifications.
- Conduct design and code reviews, resolve defects, and adhere to established development processes, configuration management practices, and release procedures.
- Design, develop, maintain, and debug embedded software applications using C and Python.
- Develop and execute automated test scripts and maintain automated test environments for embedded software systems.
- Review and interpret system and software requirements, ensuring full traceability and compliance throughout the development lifecycle.
- Perform integration, verification, and validation testing on embedded hardware and software components.
- Participate in software architecture discussions, code reviews, and design evaluations to ensure high-quality, maintainable solutions.
- Develop new features, enhance existing functionality, and troubleshoot software issues throughout the product lifecycle.
- Utilize instrument control tools, including single-board computers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and power supplies, for hardware and software validation.
- Collaborate with software and hardware engineers to troubleshoot and resolve defects, performance issues, and integration challenges.
- Maintain comprehensive test and development documentation, including test cases, software design records, test results, and compliance reports.
- Support CI/CD pipelines for automated build, testing, and release processes.
- Conduct formal verification activities and provide clear evidence of requirement compliance.
- Present development progress, test results, and technical findings to internal teams and customers in a clear and professional manner.
- Support root cause analysis of field issues and implement corrective software solutions.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on software quality, reliability, maintainability, and performance.
Essential Skills
- Proven experience with both embedded software development and testing across the full lifecycle.
- Strong hands-on experience developing and debugging embedded software in C.
- Hands-on experience scripting and automating tests using Python.
- Experience with requirements analysis, requirements traceability, and verification activities.
- Familiarity with embedded hardware concepts, microcontrollers, and real-time systems.
- Ability to design, implement, and maintain automated test environments for embedded software.
- Experience working in Linux environments.
- Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to create clear technical documentation and test plans.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to present technical information to internal teams and customers.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with CI/CD tools such as Bamboo and related automation platforms.
- Experience with version control systems, particularly Git.
- Familiarity with communication protocols including UART, I²C, SPI, Serial RapidIO, and Ethernet.
- Familiarity with unit testing tools and frameworks for embedded software.
- Familiarity with Linux environments and shell scripting for development and test automation.
- Exposure to MIL-STD qualification testing and associated compliance requirements.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes and electronic stress screening practices.
- Understanding of bare-metal programming concepts and techniques.
- Interest in working on products and equipment used in demanding installation environments.
- Motivation to follow a product from initial design through manufacturing and deployment.
- Ability to obtain security clearance, where required by project or customer.
Work Environment
This role is based primarily onsite in a cubicle-style office environment with access to well-equipped engineering labs. You will work hands-on with embedded hardware, test equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, and single-board computers, and Linux-based development environments. The team follows a 9/80 work schedule, providing a structured yet flexible workweek. The culture balances social and family-oriented lifestyles; some team members enjoy attending happy hours and spending time together outside of work, while others focus on family commitments, and both approaches are respected. The environment supports collaboration between software and hardware engineers and offers the opportunity to see products progress from design through manufacturing.
