About this role

Role Overview

Citi is seeking a highly skilled, passionate, and hands-on Senior Applications Development Engineer (VP level / Individual Contributor) to drive core software development within the Finance Engine – Hedge Fund Billing Technology team.

In this hands-on engineering role, you will be responsible for the end-to-end coding, implementation, optimization, and maintenance of high-throughput, mission-critical financial calculation engines and distributed microservices supporting global institutional hedge fund clients. This platform processes complex, tiered fee structures and high-volume transactional workflows across multiple business lines, demanding ultra-low latency, strict transactional integrity (ACID), high availability, and clean, resilient code design.

As a Senior Developer, your primary focus will be active coding, system design, query optimization, automated testing, and CI/CD deployment. You will work closely with lead architects, product analysts, and engineering peers to build robust full-stack solutions, debug complex issues, refactor legacy components, and champion software craftsmanship across modern Java and Angular frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

1. Hands-On Full-Stack Development & Microservices Engineering

- Core Application Development: Write clean, modular, efficient, and well-documented code across distributed Core Java / Spring Boot microservices and modern Angular SPAs.
- Calculation Engine Implementation: Implement and maintain high-throughput financial calculation logic, fee algorithms, and multi-asset billing workflows requiring low-latency execution and high concurrency.
- API & System Integration: Design, develop, and consume secure, robust RESTful APIs and asynchronous event-driven messaging pipelines (Kafka / RabbitMQ / JMS).
- Refactoring & Modernization: Actively contribute to legacy code modernization, containerization (Docker, OpenShift / Kubernetes), and framework upgrades to maintain modern architectural standards.
- Debugging & Problem Solving: Deep-dive into complex runtime issues, thread contention, memory leaks, and distributed transaction bottlenecks to deliver rapid, permanent technical fixes.

2. Database Development & Query Optimization

- Schema Design & SQL Engineering: Develop and optimize complex SQL queries, stored procedures, table schemas, and indexing strategies on relational databases (MSSQL, Oracle, or PostgreSQL).
- Data Integrity & Consistency: Ensure strict transactional integrity (ACID compliance), robust error handling, and auditable financial data processing across high-volume batch and real-time streams.
- Performance Tuning: Conduct database profiling, execution plan analysis, and query tuning to eliminate batch bottlenecks and reduce processing times.

3. Software Quality, Automated Testing & DevOps

- Test Automation (TDD/BDD): Write comprehensive unit, integration, and component tests using JUnit, Mockito, and relevant mocking frameworks to maintain high test coverage.
- Code Quality & Best Practices: Adhere to enterprise static analysis standards (SonarQube) and participate actively in peer code reviews to maintain high coding standards and prevent vulnerabilities.
- CI/CD & Deployment Automation: Build, maintain, and troubleshoot CI/CD pipelines (Bitbucket, Jenkins, Harness), automated build scripts, and container deployment manifests.
- Production Support & L3 Troubleshooting: Partner with SRE and DevOps teams to triage Level 3 production issues, analyze logs and metrics (Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus), and implement permanent root-cause fixes.

4. Technical Collaboration & Agile Execution

- Agile Sprint Delivery: Actively participate in sprint planning, technical task estimation, daily standups, and backlog grooming.
- Technical Specifications: Translate user stories and functional requirements into detailed technical designs, class diagrams, and sequence flows.
- Peer Collaboration: Share technical knowledge, pair-program on complex tasks, and collaborate constructively with squad members to meet sprint commitments.

5. Risk, Security & Regulatory Compliance

- Secure Coding: Follow secure development lifecycle (SDLC) standards, remediate security vulnerabilities (SAST/DAST findings), and ensure data encryption/privacy protocols are rigorously maintained.
- Audit & Control Governance: Ensure all deliverables adhere to Citi's software engineering governance, change management protocols, and risk controls.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required Technical Expertise & Experience:

- Experience: 6–10+ years of hands-on software development experience building enterprise-scale distributed systems and transactional applications.
- Core Java / JVM Mastery: Deep hands-on expertise in Core Java (Java 11/17/21), JVM memory management, multi-threading/concurrency, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, Spring Batch, and Hibernate/JPA.
- Frontend Engineering: Hands-on experience developing single-page applications (SPAs) using modern Angular, TypeScript, RxJS, HTML5, and CSS/SCSS.
- Relational Database Expertise: Strong hands-on SQL programming and tuning experience across MSSQL, Oracle, or PostgreSQL (complex joins, CTEs, indexing, query execution plans).
- Event Streaming & Messaging: Practical experience developing event-driven producers/consumers using Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, or JMS.
- Containerization & Tooling: Working knowledge of Docker, Red Hat OpenShift / Kubernetes, Linux shell scripting, and Git/Bitbucket.
- CI/CD & Testing Frameworks: Experience with Maven/Gradle, Jenkins, Harness, JUnit, Mockito, and SonarQube.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Financial domain background in Hedge Fund Operations, Fund Administration, Institutional Billing, Asset Management, or Capital Markets.
- Familiarity with caching frameworks (Redis/Hazelcast) and observability tools (Splunk, ELK, Grafana, Prometheus).
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS / GCP / Private Cloud environments).

Behavioral Competencies:

- Strong Problem Solver: Passionate about writing clean, maintainable code and solving complex algorithmic/architectural challenges.
- Execution & Ownership: Proven track record of independently taking technical tasks from design through production deployment.
- Collaborative Mindset: Strong team player with clear written and verbal technical communication skills.

Education

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related quantitative field (or equivalent practical experience).
- Relevant technical certifications (Java/Spring, Kubernetes, Cloud Practitioner) are a plus.
