About this role
Job Title: Remote Piping Designer Job Description This role focuses on designing medium to complex mechanical and piping systems for industrial and power generation facilities using both 2D and 3D design tools. You will develop piping and instrumentation diagrams, general arrangement drawings, and detailed piping layouts while working under minimal supervision and closely following project specifications, standards, and established design practices. You will support the full design development process, review vendor and mechanical supplier documents for accuracy, and coordinate mechanical and piping design activities with other engineering disciplines. Responsibilities
- Design medium to complex mechanical and piping systems using 2D and 3D design tools, with a focus on industrial and power generation applications.
- Develop piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), general arrangement (GA) drawings, equipment plans, piping orthographic drawings, and piping isometric drawings in accordance with project specifications and standards.
- Apply a solid understanding of pump suction requirements when designing piping systems to ensure reliable and efficient operation.
- Design and detail tapping for air and water headers as part of industrial piping systems.
- Incorporate experience with HDPE and underground piping into the design of plant mechanical and piping systems where applicable.
- Perform thorough checking of mechanical and piping drawings and documents to verify accuracy, completeness, and compliance with design standards.
- Follow the engineers design development process and interpret discipline-associated written and verbal instructions to prepare accurate design drawings.
- Review vendor and mechanical supplier documents to confirm technical accuracy and proper integration with overall plant systems.
- Coordinate mechanical and piping design activities with other discipline groups to ensure cohesive and clash-free designs.
- Develop physical piping layouts, including the routing of pipe and associated components within plant and facility constraints.
- Design pipe support systems that meet structural, operational, and safety requirements for powerplant and industrial piping.
- Incorporate energy systems, steam equipment, gas compressors, and balance-of-plant (BOP) systems into piping designs as required by project scope.
- Design piping for pressurized air, condensate, air, water, and steam systems, ensuring proper materials, routing, and support.
- Utilize AutoCAD and Autodesk Plant 3D effectively to produce high-quality 2D and 3D piping and mechanical design deliverables.
- Maintain design documentation in accordance with established design practices, standards, and procedures.
- Support project engineers by providing accurate design information and responding to design-related queries throughout the project lifecycle.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 10 years of industrial piping design experience, including powerplant piping and support design beyond an associate degree level.
- Associate degree in piping design or a related technical field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- Proficiency with Autodesk Plant 3D for 2D and 3D piping and mechanical design.
- Strong experience using AutoCAD and other Autodesk design tools for mechanical and piping layouts.
- Ability to develop and interpret P&IDs (piping and instrumentation diagrams) and integrate them into overall plant designs.
- Demonstrated expertise in physical piping layout and the ability to route pipe within complex plant environments.
- Experience in pipe support design, including selection and placement of supports for various piping systems.
- Experience in industrial piping for air, water, and steam systems, including condensate and pressurized air systems.
- Experience with energy systems, steam equipment, gas compressors, and BOP (balance-of-plant) systems in a plant environment.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision while adhering to established design practices, standards, and procedures.
- Understanding of the engineers design development process and the ability to translate design intent into detailed drawings.
- Capability to review vendor and mechanical supplier documents for technical accuracy and consistency with design requirements.
- Strong attention to detail and experience performing checking of mechanical and piping drawings.
- Knowledge of pump suction requirements and their impact on piping design.
- Experience with HDPE and underground piping design.
- Experience designing tapping for air and water headers.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience coordinating mechanical and piping design activities with other engineering disciplines.
- Ability to interpret and apply project specifications, discipline instructions, and standards to design work.
- Familiarity with power generation facilities and industrial plant environments.
- Strong communication skills to work effectively with project engineers and multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to manage workload and prioritize tasks in a design environment with multiple concurrent projects.
- Interest in career growth with potential to move into design supervisor or manager roles as opportunities arise.
Work Environment This role typically operates within an office-based or remote engineering environment using AutoCAD, Autodesk Plant 3D, and related design software to create 2D and 3D mechanical and piping drawings. The standard schedule is a 40-hour work week, with additional hours compensated at a premium rate, supporting a focus on maintaining work-life balance. The team structure is project-driven, with designers working closely with engineers and other discipline groups.
