The technician contributes to the development of specifications and protocols, performs routine laboratory procedures, and completes all documentation required for product testing and release in a fast-paced laboratory production environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform testing, packaging, and quality control of raw materials and finished molecular diagnostic products in a laboratory production environment.
- Complete all required documentation related to product testing, quality control, and release in an accurate, timely, and compliant manner.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of product specifications and testing protocols to ensure all distributed products meet established quality standards.
- Support and adhere to applicable regulations, including but not limited to FDA, ISO, and CMD/CAS requirements.
- Use pipettes consistently and accurately for repetitive laboratory procedures, maintaining precision and aseptic technique.
- Handle microscope slides, operate plate readers, and analyze resulting data using computer-based software.
- Generate tables, charts, graphs, and reports using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word to document and communicate test results and production data.
- Perform ELISA tests and other immunoassays as part of product formulation and quality control processes.
- Assist with various aspects of producing molecular test kits, including basic packaging, assembling kits, and supporting formulation activities as training progresses.
- Conduct raw material and product testing to support production of molecular devices and ensure ongoing product quality.
- Work effectively as part of a team of lab technicians, collaborating and communicating to meet production goals and timelines.
- Multi-task and prioritize work in a fast-paced environment, adapting to changing production demands and schedules.
- Follow laboratory safety procedures and good laboratory practices when working with mechanical equipment, biohazardous and infectious materials, and chemicals.
- Participate in training on first shift and remain open to occasional second-shift and weekend work on a voluntary basis as business needs arise.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on experience with PCR techniques, gained through academic or laboratory settings.
- Foundational knowledge in molecular biology or microbiology applicable to a production laboratory environment.
- Proficiency in pipetting with consistent accuracy, including high-volume repetitive pipette use.
- Experience with aseptic technique in a laboratory setting.
- Basic understanding of ELISA assays and immunoassay principles.
- Ability to navigate microscope slides and operate plate readers to collect and interpret experimental data.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel for generating tables, charts, graphs, and data reports.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word for preparing documentation and reports.
- Ability to multi-task and manage several responsibilities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Capacity to follow detailed protocols and standard operating procedures with strong attention to detail.
- Willingness and ability to work standard first shift hours and occasionally support second shift and weekend work on a voluntary basis.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelors degree preferred in Biology, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or another bio-related discipline.
- Academic laboratory experience with pipetting, PCR, or aseptic techniques, clearly demonstrated on the resume.
- Familiarity with molecular cell biology concepts as they relate to diagnostic product development and testing.
- Experience in a quality control (QC) technician or laboratory technician role is beneficial.
- Exposure to ELISA assays and, preferably, IFA assays is an advantage.
- Comfort working with regulatory standards such as FDA, ISO, and CMD/CAS requirements.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Effective communication skills for working within a team of laboratory technicians and production staff.
Work Environment
This role is based in a laboratory production environment focused on molecular diagnostics and the manufacture of PCR test kits for RSV, influenza, and COVID. The position begins as a 36 month contract with potential for hire, aligned with a busy seasonal period. Initial training occurs on a first shift schedule from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., followed by standard first shift hours of 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch break. Technicians are expected to be open to occasional second-shift assignments from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. several times per month on a voluntary basis, as well as occasional weekend work as business needs require. The lab is a sterile environment where technicians assist with packaging and assembling kits, performing ELISA tests, and supporting formulations and raw material testing. The team consists of approximately 1520 lab technicians working collaboratively to support production of molecular devices. While performing duties, employees may occasionally be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, biohazardous and infectious materials, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level is typically moderate. Appropriate laboratory attire is provided, including a lab coat, safety glasses, and gloves, and strict safety protocols and good laboratory practices are followed at all times. The work is highly repetitive, particularly with frequent pipette use, and is best suited to individuals who thrive in a structured, process-driven environment.
