This role supports a major defense program as a Mechanical Designer and Engineering Design Checker, using Siemens NX and Teamcenter to create, review, and validate fully defined 3D models and parametric drawings in a paperless, PMI-driven environment. The position focuses on ensuring mechanical designs meet stringent industry and military standards, with daily application of GD&T per ASME Y14.5, and plays a key role in delivering highquality, manufacturable hardware for longterm aerospace and defense missions.
Responsibilities
- Check drawing and design packages for proper content and ensure compliance with applicable industry and military standards.
- Review designs for fit, function, manufacturability, and economy of fabrication, including tolerance analysis, hardware selection, and fitment on assembly prints.
- Act as a subject matter expert in GD&T, resolving interpretation issues on drawings and providing guidance to engineering teams.
- Verify 3D models submitted to manufacturing using Siemens NX managed with Teamcenter to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Serve as a liaison with various engineering disciplines, Manufacturing, Quality, and vendors to resolve design and fabrication issues.
- Model fully defined components and assemblies efficiently using Siemens NX managed with Teamcenter.
- Create and revise parametric drawings in conformance with established 3D modeling and drawing standards.
- Review mechanical drawings with appropriate personnel, verifying completed work, dimensions, materials, and quantities to be used.
- Perform mechanical modeling using Siemens NX and Teamcenter to support design and release activities.
- Ensure drawings and models are developed and released on time with minimal quality errors to meet program schedules and budget constraints.
- Use Word, Excel, Windows, NX, and Teamcenter to document, manage, and communicate design information.
- Communicate effectively in writing and verbally to coordinate work, clarify requirements, and resolve technical issues.
- Work quickly and accurately under schedule pressure while maintaining attention to detail and patience.
- Demonstrate strong time management and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
- As requested, supervise and direct the activities of staff involved in design and checking tasks.
- Perform related duties as assigned or required to support the mechanical design and energetics department.
Essential Skills
- 1020 years of mechanical design experience in DOD, aerospace, or closely related industries such as automotive.
- Daily, expertlevel use of GD&T per ASME Y14.5, with the ability to act as a subject matter expert and make corrections to drawings.
- Approximately 8/10 proficiency with Siemens NX and Teamcenter, including experience with Unigraphics NX 9.0 and Teamcenter.
- Demonstrated experience with mechanical design, CAD, and aerospace or defense systems.
- Proven ability to check and validate mechanical drawings and 3D models for fit, function, manufacturability, and compliance with standards.
- Strong proficiency with Word, Excel, and Windows operating systems.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate with crossfunctional teams and vendors.
- Ability to work quickly and accurately under schedule pressure while maintaining high quality standards.
- Strong time management and organizational skills to manage multiple design and review tasks.
- U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain a secret security clearance.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) in a paperless design environment, including integrating assembly and work instructions, dimensions, and data sheets into drawings.
- Advanced GD&T certifications such as GDTP and formal GD&T training are highly desirable.
- Experience with military, DOD, or aerospace design beyond commercial sheet metal, rivets, and aircraft interiors.
- Background working on longterm development programs in launch systems, interceptors, or other complex defense platforms.
- Track record of meeting drawing release dates by developing drawings and models on time with relatively few quality errors.
- Understanding of performance metrics related to ontime delivery of drawing releases and maintaining program schedules and budgets.
- Experience working in environments similar to large aerospace and defense contractors.
Work Environment
Work centers on the design through launch of various missions for government and military customers, including defensive systems such as Next Generation Interceptor and the LGM35 Sentinel (Ground Based Strategic Deterrent). Most work is performed in an office setting using Siemens NX, Teamcenter, and standard office software, with occasional work in laboratory testing environments or manufacturing areas to support design validation and integration. The role operates within a 9/80 compressed work schedule, where employees work ninehour days over two weeks to total 80 hours, receiving a threeday weekend every other week.
