About this role
2027 – Internship, Technology
Programmes offered: Final-year internship, penultimate-year internship
Location: New York, Chicago
Programme duration: 10-week summer internship
Who qualifies: Penultimate or final-year students completing a bachelor’s or master’s degree
Qube Research & Technologies (QRT) is a global quantitative and systematic investment manager operating across liquid asset classes and markets worldwide. Our approach to investing is scientific: we bring together data, research, technology and trading expertise to develop and run systematic strategies.
Technology is central to how QRT works. Over the years, we have built a global research and execution platform spanning geographies, asset classes and trading horizons, from ultra-low-latency systems to large-scale research, analytics and risk infrastructure. We invest heavily in engineering, automation and scalable systems because better technology allows us to test ideas faster, operate more reliably and tackle harder problems.
Our internships are designed to give students meaningful experience of that work. You’ll join a team, contribute to real projects and learn from engineers, researchers and traders working on live problems. The environment is technical, collaborative and demanding, with plenty of scope to ask questions, test ideas and take ownership. Strong performance during the internship may lead to consideration for a full-time graduate role.
Your future role at QRT
As a Technology Intern, you’ll help build the systems, platforms and tools behind QRT’s research, trading and investment activities. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers, quantitative developers, researchers and traders, contributing to production technology and solving problems where performance, reliability and good engineering judgement matter.
Depending on your interests and strengths, you may join one of four Technology disciplines.
Software Engineer (New York)
Build the technology behind QRT’s trading and investment activities, from ultra-low-latency execution systems to global platforms for analytics, risk management and reporting. Our engineers connect the firm to markets, brokers and data providers, developing systems that process large volumes of data reliably.
You’ll work with experienced engineers, quantitative developers and researchers on a defined technical problem, making considered engineering choices and building something useful. Projects may include AI-powered static analysis, exchange simulator development, risk data platforms or trading interfaces.
FPGA Engineer (New York, Chicago)
Develop ultra-low-latency hardware that processes market data and executes orders. Working at the boundary between hardware and software, the FPGA team builds systems where small design decisions can have a measurable impact on latency, throughput and reliability.
You’ll use SystemVerilog, C++ and Python to help design, test and integrate FPGA systems into our trading infrastructure. Alongside experienced engineers, you’ll develop new functionality, verify system behaviour and investigate performance improvements, gaining practical experience with the hardware and development tools used in live trading.
Security Engineer (New York)
Help protect the systems, data and infrastructure behind QRT’s global research and trading activities. Our Security team works closely with Cloud, Infrastructure and Network Operations to understand system behaviour, identify weaknesses and build practical ways to prevent, detect and respond to threats.
You’ll contribute to security engineering, investigations and automation alongside experienced colleagues. Projects may include building agents to support cyber-security investigations, reproducing emerging attack techniques in isolated environments, researching vulnerabilities or developing tools that make security assurance more scalable and effective.
Infrastructure Engineer (New York)
Work on the on-premise hardware and operating systems behind QRT’s production trading environment. The Infrastructure team measures and optimises hardware performance, investigates Linux internals and tunes systems where small changes can make a meaningful difference to trading technology.
Alongside experienced engineers, you’ll develop a detailed understanding of how hardware and software interact. Your work may involve investigating performance constraints, testing system configurations and assessing improvements to reliability. You’ll learn to use evidence and careful analysis to make production systems faster, more stable and more predictable.
Your current skillset
- Eligibility: Penultimate or final-year students pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s in a STEM discipline, such as Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or a related Engineering or Security subject, on track for a 2:1 or above from a leading institution.
- Interest in technology: You enjoy solving technical problems and are curious about how systems work. You’re interested in building things, not just studying them.
- Software engineering experience: We value hands-on experience wherever you gained it — through personal projects, open-source contributions, hobbies, internships or academic work.
- Interest in Software Engineering, Security, Infrastructure or FPGAs.
- Programming: Proficiency in C++, C# or Python, Systems Verilog
- Tools: Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python or Bash, and tools and technologies including Git, SQL, GCC and Linux.
- Mindset: Curious, proactive and comfortable asking questions. You look for ways to make systems simpler, faster or more reliable and can turn those observations into practical improvements.
- Approach: Self-motivated, thoughtful and comfortable taking ownership of a problem.
Interviewing
- Application – Submit your application online. We review applications on a rolling basis, so applying early is recommended.
- Technical Assessment – Selected candidates will complete a coding challenge focused on core programming and problem-solving skills.
- Interviews – Shortlisted candidates will take part in interviews, either on-site at an assessment centre or via Microsoft Teams. We’ll explore your technical thinking, how you approach unfamiliar problems and how you work with others.
At QRT, interns join a team from day one, working on real problems alongside experienced colleagues. You’ll contribute to meaningful projects, learn by doing and have the support to ask questions, explore ideas and develop your skills throughout the programme.
The annualised base salary for these US positions is $178,000, prorated to reflect the duration of the internship. Interns also receive a signing bonus and a competitive benefits package, including healthcare coverage, access to a 401(k) plan, and breakfast and lunch. Beyond the work, there’s plenty happening in the office, from gym sessions and board game nights to team socials and opportunities to get to know colleagues across QRT.
QRT is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome diversity as essential to our success. QRT empowers employees to work openly and respectfully to achieve collective success.
