About this role
Responsibilities:
- Translate controls I/O lists, signal lists, and interconnect definitions into complete electrical design packages: enclosure and panel schematics, panel layouts, terminal schedules, cable schedules, harness drawings, connector pinouts, and bills of material.
- Own assigned design packages end to end: derive requirements with controls and system owners, present at design reviews, release drawings through change control, and maintain as-built records.
- Design grounding, bonding, shielding, and isolation for controls, timing, and diagnostic signals in a pulsed power, high-EMI environment, including copper versus fiber selection and clean signal reference grounds.
- Specify and size control power and instrument power distribution, circuit protection, wire and cable, and enclosure components to applicable codes and standards (NFPA 70, NFPA 79, UL 508A).
- Plan and lead handoff to E&IC technicians, including build packages, work instructions, kitting, and build sequencing, and support them through fabrication and installation.
- Develop and execute point-to-point checkout, loop checks, and commissioning procedures with technicians and controls engineers, and capture redlines through to as-built.
- Coordinate electrical interfaces with mechanical, pulsed power, optics, and facilities teams, including rack and enclosure placement, cable routing, penetrations, and power feeds.
- Support installation and commissioning on the floor, troubleshoot wiring and signal issues, and document root cause and design changes.
- Contribute to Electrical Engineering standards: drawing templates, symbol and part libraries, wire labeling and color conventions, and design review checklists.
- Lead small work packages, coordinating with controls, mechanical, and manufacturing teams, and begin mentoring junior engineers and technicians.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related STEM field; an advanced degree is a plus.
- Experience: Typically 5+ years of relevant experience in electrical design for control systems, industrial automation, or test facilities, including producing drawing packages that others build from.
- Solid foundation in:
- Control panel and enclosure design and schematic drafting (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, SolidWorks Electrical, or similar)
- Grounding, bonding, shielding, and EMI/EMC fundamentals for mixed power and signal systems
- Low voltage power distribution, circuit protection, and wire and cable sizing per NEC, NFPA 79, and UL 508A
- Working knowledge of industrial control hardware, including PLC and EtherCAT I/O, remote I/O, sensors and actuators, signal conditioning, relays, and discrete, analog, and 4-20 mA signals.
- Hands-on experience with field checkout and commissioning: point-to-point verification, loop checks, and troubleshooting with multimeters and oscilloscopes.
- Experience releasing and revising drawings through document or change control and working with PLM or document management systems.
- Ability to work independently on problems of diverse scope, with work reviewed at critical milestones, and to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance if required by future program work; a clearance is not required at the time of hire.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Desired
- Education: Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related STEM field.
- Experience in pulsed power, high voltage, laser, accelerator, or national laboratory facilities, including isolation and fiber optic signaling.
- Experience with precision timing and trigger distribution cabling, including coax, fiber, and matched-length runs.
- Experience with harness design tools (Altium, Zuken E3, Capital, or similar) and working with harness shops.
- Familiarity with safety-related controls: interlocks, emergency stop circuits, safety relays, trapped-key systems, and ISO 13849 or IEC 62061.
- Familiarity with hazardous energy control practices such as lockout/tagout, arc flash labeling, and approach boundaries.
- Experience with Beckhoff TwinCAT/EtherCAT, Siemens, or Rockwell platforms.
- Experience working from P&IDs, instrument indexes, and loop sheets.
- Experience mentoring technicians or leading small work packages.
Candidates may be considered for other positions at Xcimer Energy, and our actual base salary will be determined on an individual basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
