About this role

JOB SUMMARY:
To actively support the research project sponsored by the Department of Energy. Other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:
20% - Provide specific expertise in performing electric conductivity measurements and interpreting the results. This will entail skills in making pressed pellets for measurement and attaching electrodes, followed by obtaining and interpreting data.

30% - Assist in overseeing the PPMS instrument operation and user training for the group, and support the person(s) in charge of operation of the PPMS (Physical Properties Measurement System). These instruments are vitally important for the pursuit of federal funding in advanced quantum materials research and the publication and presentation of results in high-impact, top-tier journals and national and international conferences, respectively.

20% - Performing the experiments collecting and analyzing data, writing manuscripts, working with the students. Overseeing the training of graduate students in determining electrical conductivity of both new and known samples.

30% - Performing research in quantum materials, Designing and conducting experiments including some synthesis and crystal growth. Design a series of compounds combinations of these metal ions and synthesize them using the high temperature hydrothermal technique. Measure electrical conductivity over a wide range of temperatures. Measure temperature dependent resistivity in an external applied magnetic field. Determine magnetoresistance behavior. Prepare measurement pucks for variable temperature resistivity measurements. Form samples that are suitably compressed to ensure full conductivity across the surface of the puck. Obtain measurements using two- or four probe designs, and report on founded data.
