About this role
Tesla's low-voltage control modules are the backbone of the vehicle electronics architecture and autonomy hardware that has to keep working when the vehicle is driving itself. These safety-critical units are packed into tight vehicle space while balancing thermal, electrical, structural, manufacturing, and service constraints.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer on the SI Hardware and Electronics Product Design team, you will own controller mechanical design from architecture and first prototypes through production and deployment, on vehicle and autonomy programs. You will turn system and safety requirements into hardware that is smaller, lighter, easier to build, and fail-safe in the real vehicle, from the board and interconnect stack-up to how the module mounts and services in the car. You will work across electrical, firmware, validation, and manufacturing so these controllers can ship in vertically integrated autonomous vehicles. We want creative, self-motivated engineers with strong fundamentals and first-principles thinking. Looking for various experience levels – Junior, Senior, and Staff.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams on system architecture and develop implementations
- Optimize the components in the vehicle while considering performance, design, integration, size, mass, assembly and more
- Participate in prototype builds, component fabrication, testing and validation efforts
- Provide hands on support modeling and design of mechanical components and assemblies including plastic, sheet metal, die cast etc.
- Conduct mechanical design analysis including structural, tolerance, FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and design for assembly
- Generate detailed 3D models, technical drawings, and documentation of mechanical designs using CATIA. Collaborate with other cross-functional teams to take designs from prototype through production and deployment
- Support development of engineering and reliability test plans, test data analysis, and troubleshooting of design issues. Communicate with suppliers regarding DFM (Design for Manufacturing) feedback and support tooling and assembly bring up
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience in mechanical design
- Experience in the development of antenna / RF modules
- Proficiency in CAD software (CATIA preferred) for 3D modeling and drafting
- Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) tools (ANSYS preferred)
- Experience taking designs from initial concept through to mass production
- Basic understanding of electrical, thermal design fundamentals, familiarity with PCBAs, and electronics packaging
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to perform first principles analysis to ensure a successful design (physics, stress-strain, thermal, tolerance, cost and mass optimization, etc.)
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
