About this role

Manufacturing, tooling, and facilities engineers design the machinery, tooling, and factory layouts that build Tesla vehicles, and the software, collaboration servers, and design authoring tools they rely on need a dedicated engineering team. Design Technology, which is part of Vehicle Engineering, builds the internal tools that thousands of engineers use every day. As the founding engineer of Manufacturing Design Technology, you will build that team and own those tools for manufacturing and facilities engineering, working alongside the teams that already serve vehicle design. The role starts as a Staff Software Engineer and grows into an engineering manager title once the team grows and it makes sense.

Found and lead the Manufacturing Design Technology team: hire and grow the engineers who own manufacturing and facilities design software Own the design authoring software, collaboration servers, and integrations that manufacturing and facilities engineers use to design machinery, tooling, and factory layouts, and keep them reliable. Currently this is done in SolidWorks by thousands of people Connect Tesla's 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX) environment to manufacturing and facilities design, including SI-assisted workflows built within, on top of, or adjacent to 3DX Fix how design data moves between Tesla and its suppliers, so suppliers and Tesla engineers work from the same current design Set the team's roadmap with manufacturing, tooling, and facilities engineering leaders, and ship against it Lead technically in work with software vendors, including Dassault Systèmes Run releases, support, and on-call so production design work is never blocked

Experience leading software engineers and shipping production systems that other engineers depend on Strong hands-on software engineering background; able to review designs and code and make technical calls Working knowledge of PLM and CAD platforms, ideally SolidWorks and 3DEXPERIENCE, and the data models behind them Understanding of how machinery, tooling, and factory layouts are designed and released in a manufacturing environment Experience with supplier-facing collaboration or data exchange systems Ability to turn vague, cross-organization problems into a clear plan, and to explain that plan in writing to engineers and executives Evidence of exceptional ability: what you built, your part in it, and the result An interest in AI-driven engineering
