Functional Safety & Product Compliance Engineer Global scope | India, UK, EU & North America focus Work Location Pune (global scope; primary focus India, UK, EU & North America) Work Mode In Campus Department Functional Safety & Compliance Employment Type Full-Time Reporting To To be confirmed Experience 3–6 years
ABOUT US Unbox Robotics is a deep-tech robotics company building the world's most space-efficient warehouse sorting systems. Our swarm robotics platform — UnboxSort — enables e-commerce, retail, and 3PL operators to sort at 3–5× the throughput of conventional systems, in a fraction of the floor space. Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Pune, we operate across 20+ sites in 9 countries, serving leading players in e-commerce, retail, CEP, and 3PL across India, Europe, and the USA. Series B funded, we are scaling rapidly toward our next phase of global growth. We believe meaningful automation is built on trust — and safety and compliance are how we earn it.
ROLE OVERVIEW Own safety engineering and compliance work for an assigned Unbox Robotics product, subsystem, or application globally, with a primary focus on India, the UK, the EU, and North America (especially the USA). Turn operating scenarios into a justified assessment of applicable requirements and a practical plan for demonstrating compliance. You will author safety analyses, define safety requirements, coordinate consultants and test laboratories, and work with engineering teams to close findings through verified design measures. Success in this role means the assigned scope has a defensible classification, complete safety requirements, closed assessment findings, and configuration-specific validation evidence — with remaining risks and obligations visible before release and transferred clearly to deployment teams.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES Product Classification & Market Applicability
- Define intended use, system boundaries, operating zones, foreseeable misuse, and manufacturer/integrator responsibilities
- Assess whether the supplied scope is a complete machine, partly completed machine, component, or integrated installation, as relevant to the jurisdiction
- For current and planned sales markets, maintain a justified matrix of legislation, standards and editions, required assessments, evidence, and responsible parties
- Distinguish mandatory obligations, selected standards, and customer-specific requirements; obtain specialist review for uncertain interpretations

Hazard Analysis & Safety Requirements
- Facilitate HARA or machinery risk assessment using the applicable framework, covering installation, operation, maintenance, recovery, and decommissioning
- Select risk-reduction measures with engineering teams
- Define safety functions, safe states, response times, reset/restart conditions, and PLr or SIL targets where applicable
- Document the basis for each target and its allocation across hardware, firmware, software, and interfaces

Design Assessment, Verification & Validation
- Perform or coordinate FMEA/FMEDA, fault-tree analysis, dependent/common-cause failure analysis, and integrity calculations as appropriate
- Check supplier data and certificate conditions against actual use
- Author plans and coordinate controlled testing of safety functions and fault response
- Preserve traceability from hazards to requirements, design measures, test configurations, and results

Consultant & Laboratory Coordination
- Define work packages, technical inputs, deliverables, milestones, and acceptance criteria for consultants and test laboratories
- Review conclusions, resolve findings with owners, and track costs and schedule against the agreed plan

Compliance Evidence, Change Control & Deployment
- Assemble technical-file inputs, assessment reports, declarations where applicable, and safety-manual content
- Assess design, software, supplier, and deployment changes for re-analysis or retesting
- Define installation constraints and integration responsibilities with systems, deployment, and service teams
- Feed field incidents and recurring safety issues back into risk assessments

Engineering Deliverables You Will Own
- Application/product classification report and market applicability matrix
- Project safety plan, HARA or machinery risk assessment, and hazard register
- Functional safety concept, Safety Requirements Specification, and PLr/SIL rationale where applicable
- Safety analyses, integrity calculations, and supplier evidence assessments
- Validation plan and report, requirements traceability, and consultant finding-closure records
- Assigned technical-file sections, safety instructions, and change-impact assessments

REQUIREMENTS Must Have
- Hands-on product or machinery safety work
- Practical application of ISO 12100 and at least one machinery functional safety route (ISO 13849 or IEC 62061), with an understanding of the IEC 61508 framework
- Experience authoring risk assessments, safety requirements, safety analyses, and verification or validation records
- Ability to evaluate safety architectures, diagnostic measures, failure data, and assumptions using appropriate calculation tools
- Experience working with external consultants, assessors, or laboratories and closing technical findings
- Compliance experience in at least one target region (India, UK, EU, or North America), and the ability to research other markets with qualified specialists
- Ability to work across hardware, embedded software, controls, mechanical design, and deployment teams

Good to Have
- AMR/AGV safety
- ISO 3691-4, ANSI/A3 R15.08, and IEC 60204-1
- SISTEMA or equivalent tools
- Relevant functional safety training
- Experience coordinating electrical, EMC, radio, battery, or cybersecurity specialists where those topics affect the product

ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES Desired Qualification
- Relevant engineering education or equivalent practical experience, with hands-on product or machinery safety work

Work Experience
- 3–6 years in product, machinery, or functional safety and compliance

WE VALUE
- Defensible Judgement — every classification and target comes with a documented basis
- Traceability — hazards linked through requirements, design measures, tests, and results
- Clarity on Obligations — separates mandatory requirements from selected standards and customer asks
- Knowing When to Ask — brings in specialists early for uncertain interpretations
- Cross-Functional Partnership — works as comfortably with firmware and mechanical teams as with assessors

WHAT TO HIGHLIGHT IN YOUR APPLICATION Describe a safety assessment you owned, how you selected the applicable framework, your interaction with an external assessor, and the evidence used to close a significant finding.
WHY JOIN US Safety is what allows autonomous robots to work alongside people in warehouses worldwide. Here you will own the safety case for Unbox Robotics’ products across India, the UK, the EU, and North America, and shape how the company designs for compliance as it scales.
You won’t just tick compliance boxes. You’ll build the safety case that lets our robots operate anywhere in the world.
