BI Engineer
The BI Engineer is a technical engineering contributor within the Data & Analytics organization, responsible for designing, building, and operating scalable, maintainable, and governed business intelligence solutions across the Four Seasons data platform, Power BI, and Azure Databricks. This role goes beyond report and dashboard development, with a core focus on semantic and data modelling, reusable datasets, and BI/data products that can scale across multiple use cases.
Working closely with business stakeholders, data engineers, data architects, analysts, and subject matter experts, this role translates business needs into well-engineered semantic models, reusable datasets, and governed analytical products. These products support reporting and self-service analytics today, and broader analytics and AI use cases, such as Databricks Genie and Power BI Copilot, over time. Governance is built in by design, including metadata, lineage, data quality, certification, and appropriate access. The BI Engineer combines strong engineering depth with clear communication, sound judgment, and a service-oriented approach. Knowledge of AI will be value add.
This Toronto-based role reports to the Senior Business Intelligence Engineer and collaborates with internal stakeholders, project sponsors, technical teams, Four Seasons IT, external partners, Microsoft, and data solution providers.
What You’ll Be Doing:
BI Engineering and Solution Delivery
- Partner with business stakeholders to understand needs, clarify use cases, and translate requirements into clear, scalable BI solutions and data products.
- Engineer scalable and maintainable BI solutions using software engineering practices, including version control, CI/CD and deployment pipelines, environment promotion, parameterization, code review, and automated testing.
- Develop and optimize complex DAX measures and SQL queries for performance, accuracy, security, and accessibility.
- Design, develop, and support Power BI reports and dashboards as one consumption layer on top of governed, reusable semantic models, delivering intuitive user experiences and actionable insights.
- Rapid prototyping and iterative refinements with business users, seamlessly incorporating feedback while maintaining alignment with enterprise standards.
- Partner with data engineers to shape ingestion, transformation workflows, and BI-ready data layers across Azure and Databricks.
- Design solutions with reuse, extensibility, and long-term supportability in mind, avoiding one-off builds and reducing technical debt.
Semantic Modelling and Reusable BI/Data Products
- Design, build, and own enterprise semantic models and reusable datasets that serve as a trusted single source of truth across multiple reports, business areas, and use cases.
- Collaborate with data architects to design dimensional and enterprise-aligned data models that scale across reporting, analytics, and AI use cases rather than individual report requirements.
- Define consistent business logic, metrics, and KPI definitions in shared semantic layers (e.g., Power BI semantic models, Databricks metric views) to reduce duplication and rework.
- Build governed, reusable analytical products, such as Databricks Genie spaces and Copilot-ready Power BI semantic models, that support reporting today and broader analytics and AI use cases over time.
- Design, build, and deploy Databricks AI/BI Dashboards and Genie agents that enable natural-language analytics and self-service insights.
- Prepare models for AI consumption through clear naming, descriptions, synonyms, and curated metadata.
- Manage BI assets as products, with clear ownership, documentation, versioning, and lifecycle management.
Governance by Design, Quality, and Operational Excellence
- Embed governance by design into every BI solution, applying BI governance standards and development best practices to promote consistency, usability, maintainability, and trusted reporting.
- Capture and maintain metadata, business definitions, and data lineage (e.g., Unity Catalog, Power BI/Fabric lineage) so users can understand and trust where data comes from.
- Build data quality checks into BI solutions, and develop and execute test plans, test scripts, reconciliation checks, and release validation activities.
- Support endorsement and certification of datasets and semantic models so that trusted, governed content is clearly identified and promoted for reuse.
- Implement appropriate access controls, including row-level and object-level security, workspace roles, and least-privilege access, aligned with data privacy and security policies.
- Maintain current solutions, design, support, and operational documentation in Confluence and related repositories.
- Monitor and optimize semantic model, query, dashboard, refresh, and pipeline performance.
- Support production operations by troubleshooting defects, resolving incidents, and guiding technical teams through service interruptions and complex roadblocks.
- Manage delivery work through Jira, including stories, tasks, defects, status updates, and resolution tracking.
- Identify opportunities to improve scalability, reliability, performance, and robustness, and provide practical recommendations.
- A high-performing, technically proficient team member focused on innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Stakeholder Enablement and Collaboration
- Work with analysts, subject matter experts, and cross-functional partners to turn business challenges into measurable insights.
- Serve as a BI subject matter expert, providing technical guidance and support to BI consumers across the organization.
- Drive adoption of self-service analytics through enablement, knowledge sharing, and promotion of certified, reusable datasets and semantic models.
- Support the transition of legacy reporting solutions to future-state data and analytics platforms.
- Share design, coding, modeling, testing, and analysis practices with team members to strengthen collective capability.
- Work independently with minimal guidance while maintaining transparency on progress, risks, dependencies, and decisions.
What You Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 6+ years of IT industry experience with data-related projects.
- Minimum 5+ years of BI engineering experience, including semantic and data modelling, solution design, and report/dashboard development.
- 4+ years of experience building BI and analytics solutions within Azure environments using Azure Databricks and Power BI.
- Proven experience designing reusable, governed semantic models and datasets that support multiple reports, business areas, and use cases.
- Experience applying engineering practices to BI, such as version control, CI/CD, deployment pipelines, and automated testing.
- Experience with Databricks AI/BI dashboards, AI/BI genie and Power BI Copilot.
- Experience with AI and related projects will be value add.
- Advanced Power BI expertise across semantic modelling, development, administration, deployment, support, and visualization.
- Strong DAX expertise for complex measures, calculations, and semantic model design.
- Strong SQL skills, including writing, troubleshooting, enhancing, and optimizing complex queries, stored procedures, functions, and database components.
- Strong semantic and dimensional modelling skills (e.g., star schema design), with experience in enterprise data warehousing, large datasets, and tabular models in Power BI and Azure Analysis Services.
- BI engineering practices, including Git-based version control, CI/CD and deployment pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps, Power BI deployment pipelines), Power BI Projects (PBIP/TMDL), Tabular Editor, and automated testing.
- Knowledge of data governance practices and tools, including metadata management, lineage, data quality, endorsement/certification, row-level and object-level security, Unity Catalog.
- Experience with the Azure analytics stack, including ADLS, Azure Data Factory, Azure Analysis Services, Power BI, Synapse Analytics, and related services.
- Working knowledge of Azure Databricks Lakehouse, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, metric views, AI/BI Dashboards, Genie and Power BI Copilot.
