About this role

Summary

The Team Lead is a senior, hands-on engineer who also leads the people in their team. The role works on Learnosity's Build product, our cloud-based API toolkit that educational companies use to create interactive and accessible assessment experiences at scale.

As a Senior Engineer, you bring technical authority and help set technical strategy for your team's area, sharing that with any other Senior Engineers on the team. You will design, build and ship software across the full stack: JavaScript, React and CSS on the front end, and PHP, Python, Postgres/MySQL, Elasticsearch and AWS on the back end. As a Team Lead, you are responsible for the growth, wellbeing and effectiveness of the engineers in your team.

Above all, the Team Lead enables the team. You create clarity, remove blockers and help others grow, while keeping ownership and decision-making spread across the team rather than centred on you.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Engineer

- Technical strategy and delivery . Help set medium to long-term technical strategy for the team's area, and own delivery of the team's objectives, including technical specs and roadmaps for projects with cross-team dependencies.
- Code quality . Stay hands-on, writing flexible, efficient, well-tested and well-documented code, and keep quality high through code review. Find the root cause of complex issues and deliver permanent fixes.
- Software and architecture design . Design components and systems that work across API and system boundaries, with simplicity, testability and maintainability in mind. Give useful feedback on others' designs, and roll out or deprecate features with monitoring in place and failure paths documented.
- Proving it works . Prove out complex functionality with real data, and use AI tools and new technologies where they help the team deliver faster.

As a Team Lead

- People leadership . Hold regular 1:1s, coach team members and work with them on performance. Run 6-month check-ins and annual reviews with support from your manager, approve leave, and help hire and onboard new engineers.
- Growth and team health . Mentor less experienced engineers, give constructive feedback, keep an eye on team morale and step in early when someone is struggling.
- Coordinating delivery . Make sure the team has clear priorities, realistic plans and few blockers. Track progress, risks and dependencies, work with other teams to resolve them, and escalate when needed.
- Ways of working . Work with Product and Design to clarify goals and priorities, make sure agile ceremonies happen and run well, and help the team reach alignment without becoming the sole decision maker.

Requirements

Skills and Experience

Required :

- 5+ years as a software engineer, including time at senior level delivering medium to long-term projects with business impact
- 2+ years leading engineering teams, including formal people processes such as 1:1s, performance reviews and interviewing
- Strong JavaScript and ReactJS, including state management, component-based architecture and design systems
- Strong PHP, ideally with Symfony and/or Doctrine, and Python in a backend or data-oriented context
- Experience with relational and NoSQL databases in high performance environments
- Proven software and architecture design skills, including components that interact across API or system boundaries
- Experience leading technical projects end to end, covering specs, roadmaps, estimation and cross-team dependencies
- Experience mentoring and coaching engineers, and a real interest in developing people as well as technology
- Experience working in agile teams in close partnership with Product and Design
- Clear written and verbal communication, including technical documentation

Nice to Have :

- Experience leading cross-team or cross-discipline initiatives
- Experience rolling out major features in a production SaaS environment
- Commercial experience with AI tools, including AI-assisted or agentic software delivery
- Experience with TDD and setting up CI/CD pipelines
- Experience with Node.js
- B.Sc or M.Sc in Software Engineering, Computer Science or similar

Key Behaviours

- Ownership . Follows through on commitments for their own work and the team's. Tackles root causes, takes accountability for failures and helps the team learn from them.
- Decision making . Consults the right people and makes timely decisions without cutting corners on platform quality, for example by defining an iterative MVP while keeping sight of the long-term design.
- Collaboration . Builds trust across teams and disciplines, avoids blame, and commits to a group decision even after disagreeing.
- Communication . Shares information so the right people stay informed, adjusts the message to the audience, and listens to understand.
- Team first . Empowers team members to make decisions, shares technical authority with other Senior Engineers, and avoids becoming the team's only point of contact.

Success in this Role

In the first 6–12 months, success in this role would look like:

- Built trust with each engineer in the team through regular 1:1s, and completed their first check-ins and reviews
- Owned and released at least one complex Build feature with the team, from design through to customers using it
- Set clear technical direction for the team's area, agreed with the other Senior Engineers
- Built strong working relationships with the team's Product Manager and Designer, and with other Team Leads
- Improved a team practice the team now relies on, such as planning, code review, testing or AI-assisted development
