About this role
Job Title: Reliability Engineer Job Description
This role offers an opportunity for a senior, hands-on reliability engineer to build and lead a developing reliability discipline within a growing engineering organization. You will work with a relatively junior engineering team to establish robust reliability methodologies, deeply analyze field and SCADA data, and translate insights into practical improvements in product design, controls, programming, and maintenance practices. The position focuses on making product reliability predictable by understanding real-world performance and failures, and by embedding reliability thinking across the broader organization.
Responsibilities
- Build and mature the reliability engineering function within an organization where the discipline is still in its early stages.
- Serve as a senior technical leader while remaining highly hands-on with reliability analysis and field data evaluation.
- Analyze field datasets and SCADA data in detail to understand instability, identify trends, and determine what the data reveals about product performance and failures.
- Evaluate the lifetime and expected reliability of units and products, and communicate these findings clearly to engineering and field teams.
- Establish and refine reliability methodologies, including defining appropriate scopes of analysis for different products and systems.
- Lead and perform detailed root cause analysis and failure analysis, using tools such as DFMEA and PFMEA to identify and mitigate failure modes.
- Analyze fielded products and real-world failure data to drive design improvements, process changes, and reliability enhancements.
- Work across mechanical, electrical, thermal, engine/generator, and controls-related failure modes to develop comprehensive reliability solutions.
- Guide and mentor less experienced engineers, teaching them reliability concepts, analysis techniques, and best practices.
- Improve the teams ability to report, interpret, and analyze reliability data accurately and consistently.
- Integrate reliability practices into engineering, service, and field operations rather than allowing reliability to function as a silo.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, service, and field teams to build credibility and ensure reliability considerations are embedded throughout the product lifecycle.
- Spend significant time in the field observing real-world equipment performance and failure modes, and use these observations to inform reliability strategies.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by using reliability insights to refine design release processes, preventive maintenance strategies, and overall product quality.
- Contribute to long-term efforts to make product reliability predictable by enabling the organization to use field data and statistical analysis to anticipate reliability performance.
Essential Skills
- Proven experience in reliability engineering with strong hands-on reliability and data analysis capabilities.
- Demonstrated expertise in root cause analysis and failure analysis for complex products and systems.
- Experience establishing reliability methodologies and determining appropriate scopes of analysis for different products and applications.
- Strong DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and PFMEA (Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) experience.
- Experience analyzing fielded products and real-world failure data to drive actionable improvements.
- Background working with complex physical and electromechanical products.
- Ability to work across mechanical, electrical, thermal, engine/generator, and controls-related failure modes.
- Ability to independently perform detailed analyses and effectively teach and lead less experienced engineers through the process.
- Experience with design release, continuous improvement, and preventive maintenance from a reliability perspective.
- Ability to interpret and analyze field datasets and SCADA data to understand product performance and instability.
- Strong communication skills to help engineers and cross-functional teams confidently use the language and concepts of reliability.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience building or maturing a reliability function within an engineering organization.
- Demonstrated success in improving teams ability to report, interpret, and analyze reliability data correctly.
- Experience integrating reliability practices into engineering, service, and field operations.
- Comfort working in environments where processes and practices are still being defined and improved.
- Ability to establish credibility quickly with engineering, service, and field teams within the first 612 months.
- Willingness to spend significant time in the field to understand real-world equipment performance and failure modes.
- Interest in long-term engagement, as the role is envisioned over an extended multi-year period.
- Motivation to help an organization move from reactive to predictive reliability using field data and statistical analysis.
Work Environment
This position is based on-site at one of three primary locations, with the option to sit in Loveland, San Antonio, or Casper. The role requires being on-site five days per week during the first 6090 days to build relationships, understand systems, and establish reliability practices. After this initial period, there is potential for a hybrid work arrangement that combines on-site and remote work. The role involves approximately 50% travel to the field, primarily across the Rocky Mountain corridor from Canada to Texas, to observe equipment in operation and gather real-world reliability insights. You will work closely with engineering, service, and field teams in a hands-on environment that includes exposure to mechanical, electrical, thermal, engine/generator, and controls systems, as well as SCADA and other field data collection technologies.
