Summary:

The Lowell Sun is looking for a journalist to join the team! This is an opportunity to cover the stories that shape our communities, from breaking news and public safety to local government, human interest features, and the issues that matter most to our readers. We're looking for a journalist who enjoys being out in the community, asking questions, building sources, and finding stories others may miss.

Although this is a remote position, candidates must reside in the Lowell, MA area.

What you will do:

- Attend and report on news events and produce stories, features, analysis, and enterprise
- Gather, prepare and post breaking news stories to the web
- Be a multimedia storyteller via social media
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for local news beat and have a curious nature to find captivating stories of interest to local readers
- Develop sources and relationships in the coverage area
- Attend events, write stories, capture multimedia, edit content, and post stories by daily deadlines
- Travel in and around the region as required to attend events, meet with contacts, sources, and press conferences
- Work autonomously and collaborate with other journalists

What you will bring:

- Knowledge of news and enthusiastic about reporting on a local government and politics
- Strong command of the English language including excellent grammatical skills necessary for writing and editing
- Proficiency in using technology including PCs, social media platforms, and smartphones; familiarity with Wordpress is helpful
- Time management skills are critical.
- Brings a passion without bias to the beat
- Some prior work experience at a daily, weekly, community newspaper is desired
- Experience in news reporting, news writing, shooting video, taking photographs and using social media
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college or a degree in journalism, communication, or related field is preferred

Benefits and Compensation:

The hourly wage range is $15.00 - $19.00 + cell phone stipend. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility). Conditions of Employment:

- A full pre-employment background check and MVR will be conducted as part of the selection process. Must be willing to submit and pass the necessary required checks
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation
- Travel – This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, in-person training sessions and/or meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed
- Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
