This role is a hybrid work arrangement. Work schedule to be discussed with the Hiring Manager according to the guidelines defined by the department.

Your role:

CBC’s Business & Rights team has a position available, reporting to the Senior Manager, Inhouse Programming.

As a Manager, Business & Rights, Inhouse Programming, you work closely with CBC's in-house production, programmers and external partners across all CBC departments, regions and media lines.  You decide how to approach negotiations and structure deals that meet CBC’s rights strategies and priorities.  You will make recommendations and seek approvals from your Senior Manager on deal terms that best represent CBC’s priorities and interests.

You negotiate and draft content licensing agreements that represent and protect CBC’s interests, and manage those relationships on behalf of CBC.  Your focus on content licensing agreements will be on news suppliers, photo suppliers, and podcast producers, but could include a diverse range of other types of CBC (or Radio-Canada) in-house produced content as well.

You decide how to approach the research, negotiation, licensing, administration and payment of all rights, residuals and royalties associated with the exploitation of CBC’s programming in accordance with CBC’s collective agreements, contracts, copyright law and CBC policies and practices.

You design training programs and related communication tools to provide business direction, context and rights options to inhouse content creators across English Services departments, both at the network and regional levels across the country.   You deliver training where appropriate, and work with CBC Learning to establish other best means of communicating such information.

You provide leadership and direction to internal partners across the corporation on complex rights, financial, policy, and business matters.   You provide constructive direction, feedback and evaluation to ensure that all production elements and relationships with third parties meet CBC strategic objectives, business and programming standards.

Your responsibilities would include:

- Taking a tailored approach to deal and contract negotiations for a wide range of projects intended for CBC’s owned & operated and branded & operated platforms, including but not limited to CBC Radio One and CBC Music, CBC Television and CBC News Network, CBC Gem, CBC FAST Channels and YouTube.
- Ensuring CBC's contractual requirements and business interests are secured on a consistent and nuanced basis across programs of similar scope.
- Reviewing third party agreements, including agreements from multi-national news suppliers to ensure harmonization with CBC’s rights and obligations.
- Applying strategic thinking to balance CBC’s needs and the rights of artists under collective agreements and from under-represented groups.
- Making decisions during negotiations that have complex logistical, legal and financial implications.
- Assisting in research, management and presentation of rights data across genres, platforms, and windows of exploitation.
- Working with other managers, supervise and co-ordinate the activities of B&R InHouse Programming staff, and delegate and assign activities to appropriate staff.
- Designing and delivering training programs to ensure CBC production units understand and follow copyright law and deal terms for content with which they work.
- Refining our business approach through continuous innovation, agile processes, and market-leading thinking about rights and financing models.
- Authorizing contract payments where required.

We are looking for candidates with the following:

- A minimum of five (5) years relevant experience in drafting and negotiating major contracts.
- A law degree is an asset.
- At least five (5) years of business and/or operational experience, including In-depth knowledge of all forms of current media, negotiating techniques, corporate business practices, and industry union agreements (eg. ACTRA, WGC, CFM).
- Facility with approved artificial intelligence technologies to improve workflow and data analysis. Eagerness to learn and adapt to emerging technologies.
- Strong understanding of linear and streaming entertainment business models, social media, and other online platforms including FAST channels.
- Strong computer skills including Google suite, Excel, Microsoft Office and Adobe.
- Ability to comprehend and translate the concerns of creative producers/directors/creative heads into appropriate contracts within the constraints of the applicable collective agreements, regulatory bodies, CBC policies and funding guidelines.
- Creativity and innovative problem-solving skills to address issues in a manner satisfactory to all parties.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including an ability to work with both emerging and experienced producers.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities, and work under pressure.
- Ability to exercise judgment and work independently taking initiative.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Bilingualism (French/English) would be considered an asset.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
