Senior Software Engineer – API Services, Core Banking

Overview:

Join M&T Bank's API Services organization as a Senior Software Engineer supporting Core Banking APIs, where you'll help develop and modernize the backend services that connect applications across the Bank to critical downstream systems. API Services serves as a central integration layer, enabling digital, business banking, retail, and commercial applications to securely access capabilities such as account, transaction, and statement information.

In this role, you'll design, develop, and support Java-based APIs and backend services while contributing to cloud modernization and the continued evolution of the Bank's enterprise API ecosystem. You'll join a collaborative engineering environment where team members develop deep expertise in specific services while gaining exposure across multiple products and application areas. Primary Responsibilities:

- Work independently and within the boundaries of the approved Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) to process, design, and develop applications to solve business needs and minimize risks to the Bank by writing clean and resilient code.
- Design, develop, enhance, and support Java-based backend applications, APIs, and services supporting the Bank's enterprise API ecosystem.
- Build and support API-driven solutions and integrations that enable communication between internal and external banking applications and downstream systems.
- Develop new API capabilities and enhance existing services to support evolving business and technology needs.
- Regularly review pull requests, provide feedback, and execute on the change management of the request.
- Author organized, clean, efficient, and secure source code at an advanced level in a minimum of one programming language and apply knowledge of appropriate data structures and algorithms to solve business problems.
- Utilize source code management tools to manage and deploy code/applications, ensure compliance with SDLC policies, and support merge conflict resolution.
- Independently analyze and critique technical and business requirements to ensure completeness, accuracy, and feasibility.
- Troubleshoot and support backend applications, services, APIs, and related platform issues across development and production environments.
- Collaborate, document, and communicate technical implementation details clearly and concisely with engineers, technical partners, and dependent teams.
- Conduct code reviews, providing constructive feedback on code quality and improvements to team members.
- Contribute to conversations with business and technical stakeholders regarding application architecture and technology solutions.
- Contribute to modernization efforts, including the migration and evolution of existing services toward cloud-based technologies.
- Support highly available, enterprise-scale applications and services.
- Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation across the engineering organization, including the use of emerging and AI-assisted development technologies.
- Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls in accordance with the Company's Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
- Promote an environment that supports a culture of belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
- Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.

Education and Experience Required:

- Associate's degree and a minimum of 5 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience or Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience. In lieu of degree, a combined minimum of 7 years' education and/or relevant work experience, including a minimum of 3 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience.
- Advanced proficiency in a minimum of one relevant programming language.
- Experience developing backend applications and services using Java or a similar object-oriented programming language.
- Experience developing applications and backend services using Spring Boot or a comparable application development framework.
- Experience designing, developing, or supporting APIs, RESTful services, and API-driven architectures.
- Experience with source control and software development lifecycle tools and practices.
- Experience supporting complex enterprise applications and technology platforms.
- Experience working with cloud technologies or cloud-based application environments.

Education and Experience Preferred:

- A minimum of 5 years of Java development experience.
- A minimum of 5 years of Spring Boot development experience.
- Advanced analytical skills specific to application development.
- Microsoft Azure experience.
- Strong backend software engineering experience, including the development and support of enterprise APIs and services.
- Experience with API management, API gateway technologies, or enterprise integration platforms.
- Experience with cloud-native application development and cloud migration or modernization efforts.
- Experience supporting enterprise-scale applications with significant transaction or API volumes.
- Experience working across multiple applications, services, or integrated systems.
- Experience working with upstream and downstream technology partners and troubleshooting issues across integrated applications.
- Experience working in a collaborative Agile team environment.
- Exposure to AI-assisted software development tools and development practices.
- Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to analyze complex or ambiguous technical problems, develop solutions, and communicate technical reasoning clearly.
- Ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively across technical teams.
- Ability to learn new technologies and adapt to evolving technical environments.
- Ability to multitask on complex projects.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
- Financial services experience preferred.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $97,100.00 - $161,800.00 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
