About this role
I'm currently hiring for Data Analytics Opportunity in Olathe, KS! This role focuses on designing and maintaining robust data quality rules for utility billing and energy performance data, verifying savings for performance contracts, and delivering actionable insights to Energy Managers. You will work across SQL, data processing tools, and analytics platforms to ensure that utility data is accurate, savings are correctly calculated, and clients receive clear, reliable reporting that supports energy and cost reduction goals. Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain a comprehensive library of rules that detect utility data faults, including missing or late bills, double-counted or redelivered bills, new or replaced meters not reflected in building totals, rate and demand anomalies, and baseline drift.
- Run automated screenings across every client portfolio on a regular schedule and route flagged issues into a prioritized Jira backlog, directing routine data fixes to the Utility Coordinator and savings-related questions to Energy Managers.
- Test each data quality rule against known cases, monitor false alarms and missed issues, and continuously tune or retire rules that do not provide sufficient value.
- Develop solutions in SQL and modern data processing tools, using AI technologies where they accelerate development or review, and produce clear, maintainable code and documentation that the broader team can run and support.
- Automate manual components of savings verification, cost analysis, and annual reporting to increase efficiency and consistency.
- Investigate savings that do not reconcile across the data warehouse, the energy management platform, and cost analysis workbooks, tracing each discrepancy to a root cause and quantifying its financial impact.
- Provide each Energy Manager with a regular portfolio watchlist that highlights what has changed, what is at risk, and which items should be discussed with the client.
- Lead data review activities before dashboards and annual reports are delivered to clients, including documenting non-routine events such as vacancies, fuel conversions, and building changes.
- Write clear, actionable findings for Energy Managers that describe the issue, its effect on savings, the recommended fix and the order in which to apply it, and the validation steps that confirm it worked.
- Own annual savings verification for performance contracts against weather-adjusted baselines, project models, and guaranteed savings, in alignment with IPMVP practices.
- Ensure building totals and baselines remain accurate when meters are added or replaced, and verify the integrity of the data after changes.
- Review how savings are priced against utility tariffs, including demand ratchets and customer charges, to confirm that savings calculations and pricing are correct.
- Translate recurring findings into concise guides, checklists, and training materials for Energy Managers, Engineering, and the Utility Coordinator, focusing on what to watch for in the data.
- Coach the Utility Coordinator on data quality processes as their responsibilities expand, and hold regular office hours to support data-related questions from the team.
- Maintain up-to-date documentation of review processes, rules, and data definitions in Confluence so that standards are clear and accessible.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to continuously improve data quality monitoring, anomaly detection capabilities, and reporting workflows.
- Use customer service skills to support internal and external stakeholders, ensuring data issues and savings questions are addressed promptly and professionally.
Essential Skills
- At least 3 years of professional experience in data analysis or analytics engineering, including production SQL work against relational databases.
- Strong proficiency in SQL, including writing complex queries and working with SQL Server or similar database technologies.
- Experience working with a data processing or scripting language (such as Python or a similar language) for automation and scheduled checks, tests, or rules.
- Demonstrated track record of investigating discrepancies in numbers across multiple systems, identifying root causes, and explaining findings with clear evidence.
- Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with large, messy datasets that require cleaning, transformation, and analysis.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain data problems and their business impact to non-technical colleagues and to teach others a repeatable process.
- Proven ownership mindset, including working from a backlog, setting priorities, and following issues through to a verified fix.
- Ability to design, build, and maintain data quality rules for utility data faults such as missing bills, double-counted bills, meter changes, and rate anomalies.
- Ability to innovate and build new tools and processes rather than relying solely on legacy solutions.
- Comfort using AI tools for development and review, along with the judgment to validate and verify AI-generated outputs.
- Customer service orientation for supporting Energy Managers, Engineering, the Utility Coordinator, and other stakeholders.
- Experience with data analysis in the utility or energy-related industry is strongly beneficial.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with utility billing data and tariffs, including demand charges, ratchets, and customer charges.
- Familiarity with energy management platforms such as Atrius (BuildingOS), Arcadia, EnergyCAP, ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, or similar tools.
- Knowledge of IPMVP, weather normalization, or energy savings performance contracting; CMVP or CEM certifications are a plus.
- Experience building data quality monitoring or anomaly detection systems for operational or financial datasets.
- Hands-on experience with Power BI or other business intelligence and dashboard tools.
- Experience using Jira and Confluence for backlog management, documentation, and collaboration.
- Familiarity with Git for version control and collaboration on code and analytics assets.
- Exposure to AWS or other cloud data warehouse environments and modern data platforms.
- Experience training, mentoring, or supporting internal and external customers on data processes and tools.
- Experience in the utility industry or renewable energy sector, with an understanding of how businesses save money and energy.
- Experience working with Microsoft Power Platform and integrating Power BI with other data solutions.
