About this role
Job Title: Production Supervisor First-Shift CNC Operations Job Description
This role oversees first-shift CNC machining operations, providing hands-on technical guidance and leadership to a team of machinists and operators. The Production Supervisor ensures efficient, high-quality production across a variety of materials and CNC equipment, with a strong focus on problem-solving, cycle-time improvement, and process optimization in a high-mix machining environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise first-shift CNC machining operations, ensuring production goals, quality standards, and safety requirements are consistently met.
- Manage and mentor a team of approximately 78 CNC machinists, machine operators, setup machinists, and CNC programmers/operators.
- Provide hands-on support with CNC setup and operation, including troubleshooting machining processes and equipment issues.
- Apply G-code knowledge, speeds and feeds, and tooling selection and adjustment to optimize machining performance and part quality.
- Diagnose and resolve recurring machine and process problems, working directly with machinists to troubleshoot complex issues.
- Drive cycle-time and throughput improvements in a high-mix production environment by refining processes and workflows.
- Identify opportunities to improve tooling, optimize speeds and feeds, and reduce scrap and rework.
- Ensure tight-tolerance machining requirements are met across diverse materials and specialty alloys.
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing engineering and other technical teams to enhance processes and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support CNC maintenance and troubleshooting needs beyond basic machining issues to keep equipment running reliably.
- Maintain a culture of accountability, technical excellence, and proactive problem-solving within the production team.
- Monitor production performance metrics and use data to guide decisions that improve efficiency and quality.
Essential Skills
- Meaningful hands-on CNC machining expertise, including setup, operation, and troubleshooting.
- Strong working knowledge of G-code, speeds and feeds, tooling selection and adjustment, and machining process troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated experience in cycle-time and process improvement within CNC machining operations.
- Approximately 46+ years of supervisory or leadership experience in a nonentry-level production environment.
- Proven track record managing CNC machinists, machine operators, setup machinists, CNC programmers/operators, or production machining teams.
- Comfort managing a team of roughly 78 direct reports in a fast-paced manufacturing setting.
- Experience with Swiss-type CNC turning equipment or highly transferable CNC turning experience.
- Hands-on machining experience across diverse metals and materials, including alloy steels, brass, Monel, nickel alloys, Hastelloy, and other specialty or hard-to-machine materials.
- Demonstrated problem-solving mentality with clear examples of fixing machining problems, reducing cycle times, improving tooling, optimizing speeds and feeds, and reducing scrap.
- Ability to work closely with machinists to troubleshoot complex machining and process issues rather than simply operating equipment at a basic level.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Direct experience with Star Swiss or similar Swiss-type CNC equipment.
- Background in medical device machining, aerospace machining, nuclear or power generation manufacturing, or precision machining environments.
- Experience working in tight-tolerance and high-performance alloy machining environments.
- Previous experience in a Machine Shop Supervisor or similar leadership role in machining.
- Bachelors degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering.
- Experience partnering with manufacturing engineering teams to implement process improvements and resolve technical challenges.
- Capability to perform CNC maintenance and troubleshooting beyond basic machining issues.
- Experience improving throughput and cycle times in high-mix production environments involving materials such as alloy steels, Monel, steel, carbon steel, and brass.
Work Environment
The role is based in a production machine shop environment, overseeing first-shift CNC operations in a high-mix, tight-tolerance setting. The team works with Swiss-type CNC equipment and other CNC machinery, machining a wide range of materials including alloy steels, brass, Monel, nickel alloys, Hastelloy, and other specialty, hard-to-machine metals. The environment emphasizes hands-on technical engagement, close collaboration with machinists and manufacturing engineering, and continuous improvement in throughput, cycle times, and quality. Typical attire is standard industrial shop wear appropriate for a machining and manufacturing facility, with a strong focus on safety and adherence to shop-floor procedures.
