About this role

AI/ML Data Engineer- Senior/Lead

Woolworths Group is Australia and New Zealand's largest retailer, serving over 24 million customers across our brands every week with more than 1,400 stores across Woolworths Supermarkets, Woolworths New Zealand, and BIG W, alongside fast-growing eCommerce and B2B businesses.

Wiq brings together the best of Woolworths Group and Quantium, a world-class advanced analytics business, to reimagine retail by solving the most complex problems with data, AI, and analytics. We work in agile squads, focused on the hardest problems for our customers and team while building our people's skills along the way.

What you'll do

We are looking for A/ML Data Engineers who are hands-on technical specialist who will design, build, and ship the AI tools and products used across Woolworths Group. You will work end to end across backend, frontend, and cloud, using coding agents every day, supported by a cross-functional squad including data scientists, technical product leaders, applied AI engineers, and business SMEs working on our Google Cloud platform.

- Lead the design, development, and operationalisation of AI products and multi-agent workflows in GCP, from first prototype to production.
- Establish standards for evaluating AI systems, including eval datasets, data pipelines, data lineage, regression testing, observability, and reliable monitoring practices.
- Track developments across coding agents, agent frameworks, distributed compute, and frontier and open-source models to bring high-impact capabilities into the team.
- Spend most of your time shipping production-grade code with coding agents, focusing on quality, latency, tool integrations, and cloud cost control.

What you'll bring

You'll be a senior engineer who is already sharp with AI. You'll work with coding agents (such as Claude Code) every day and judge quickly when an agent is heading the wrong way. You'll take ambiguous problems through to shipped products, and you'll be curious, collaborative, and autonomous to own problems end to end. As a trusted partner to technical product managers and commercial stakeholders, you will translate business use cases into working AI products and clearly communicate technical trade-offs, risks, and security considerations to stakeholders at all levels.

- Strong senior engineering experience across backend, frontend, and cloud, in Python or TypeScript, rather than deep specialisation in one stack.
- Proven, hands-on experience building AI enabled solutions such as agents, RAG, or LLM integrations, ideally in production, and evaluating them with eval datasets, regression suites, or LLM as judge.
- Tertiary qualifications in computer science, software engineering, information technology, or similar, or equivalent practical experience.

Highly regarded

- Hands-on experience with Google Cloud: Vertex AI, Cloud Run, BigQuery, Dataflow, Cloud Composer, GKE, Terraform, or Pulumi.
- Experience with agent frameworks, MCP, or LLM observability tooling.
- Experience building data pipelines for AI systems, such as eval datasets, feedback capture, or BigQuery and Dataflow workloads.
- Retail, FMCG, or large-scale digital eCommerce experience (desirable but not essential).

What you'll experience

Our Team Members are at the heart of everything we do and we're always looking for ways to support your career journey and reward great work:

- Team discounts across our range of Woolworths Group brands you know and love and a robust rewards program that celebrates and incentivises purpose-driven work.
- A global business with endless career possibilities around every corner and across every discipline, and ways to meet the food and everyday needs of more than 24 million customers every week. Backed by a culture of genuine care, a flexible approach to work and the support to grow your career and make a meaningful impact, the possibilities for what we can achieve together are endless.
