About this role
Tesla is seeking a Steam Turbine Engineer to support design, construction, and startup of combined cycle power plants for industrial, manufacturing, and energy projects. You will own the steam turbine scope from cycle definition through first roll, synchronization, and performance testing. You will coordinate with mechanical, piping, civil, electrical, and controls teams, and with turbine manufacturers, contractors, and commissioning teams. This role is based in Austin, with travel to project sites during construction and commissioning.
Define steam turbine and steam cycle requirements from concept through issued for construction, including steam conditions, reheat, exhaust, condenser pressure, and heat and mass balances Prepare steam turbine generator specifications, technical bid evaluations, performance guarantees, and resolution of supplier deviations Integrate the steam turbine with the heat recovery steam generator, condenser, bypass, condensate, feedwater, lube oil, and gland steam systems Coordinate piping and foundation interfaces, including nozzle loads, thermal growth, water induction prevention, pedestal design inputs, and maintenance access Define startup and protection requirements, including start curves, rotor stress limits, trip and overspeed protection, and generator synchronization Support factory testing, equipment setting, alignment, strain-free piping, and mechanical completion with the manufacturer’s technical advisors Lead commissioning through steam blows, first roll, synchronization, load testing, and performance testing, including 30%, 60%, and 90% design reviews
Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience 5 years of steam turbine engineering, design, or commissioning on utility-scale or industrial power generation projects Experience taking a combined cycle, cogeneration, or steam plant through construction, commissioning, and startup, including steam blows, first roll, and synchronization Working knowledge of steam turbine design, combined cycle thermodynamics, and balance-of-plant systems, including heat recovery steam generators, condensers, and steam bypass Proficiency in a heat balance tool such as Thermoflow, GateCycle, or EBSILON Ability to apply ASME, NFPA, and IEEE requirements when reviewing drawings and writing specifications and test procedures Ability to travel to project sites for extended periods and deliver under construction-driven schedules
