About this role
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
The Transportation Shift Supervisor reports directly to the Supervisor, Rail Transportation and provides first-line floor supervision for Engineers and Conductors on an assigned shift, while also carrying crew-calling responsibility for that shift as a listed duty within this broad supervisory role. This position ensures crews are safely, accurately, and consistently supervised and staffed in accordance with CapMetro operating rules, safety procedures, and applicable FRA requirements, including hours-of-service regulations (49 CFR Part 228). During peak crew-change windows, crew-calling duties — building and managing the crew board, calling crews within hours-of-service windows, marking crews up and down, and managing the extra board — are this position's primary focus. Outside of those windows, floor supervision — ride checks, efficiency testing, real-time incident response, coaching, and discipline — is the default duty. This position is expected to maintain proficiency in both functions through cross-training, since crew calling cannot stop when any one Transportation Shift Supervisor is unavailable. Because this role combines discipline authority with crew assignment authority, the Transportation Shift Supervisor follows established safeguards — including second-review practice by the Supervisor, Transportation for crew assignment decisions made in the period immediately following a disciplinary action — to protect fairness and hours-of-service compliance.
WHAT YOU BRING
- High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree or bachelor's degree in Transportation, Business Administration, or a related field preferred. An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered.
- Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in railroad or rail transit T&E crew operations.
- One (1) year of lead, supervisory, or crew-calling/scheduling experience preferred.
- Previous experience as a Conductor or Engineer, or direct crew-calling/crew-dispatch experience, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of railroad or rail transit T&E crew operations, operating rules, and hours-of-service regulations (49 CFR Part 228).
- Knowledge of crew-calling and crew-board management practices, including marking crews up/down and managing the extra board.
- Demonstrated ability to promote and sustain a positive safety culture and to recognize and respond to safety risks, rule deviations, and fatigue-related concerns.
- Demonstrated supervisory capability, including the ability to assign work, monitor performance, coach employees, address attendance or conduct concerns, and administer discipline.
- Ability to manage competing priorities between floor supervision and crew-calling duties, particularly during peak crew-change windows.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally across a politically, economically, and culturally diverse workforce.
- Ability to recognize situations where discipline and crew-assignment responsibilities could create a conflict of interest, and to follow established safeguards.
- Proficiency in standard business, scheduling, and crew-calling software applications.
